Internet Searches on Job Seekers: Unethical or Good Business Sense?

The debate rages on as to whether it is ethical to perform an Internet search on an applicant before calling them in for an interview. Some believe conducting an Internet search is a violation of privacy and that information uncovered on the Internet can lead to bias and discrimination. And while I agree that there needs to be guidelines about how the information uncovered is used to make a hiring decision, I think it's a bad business practice to ignore the information entirely. Here's a great example of digital dirt that was uncovered before a poor hiring decision was made.
