Starwood Hiring 12,000 Hotel Staffers in 2010
The travel and tourism industry is beginning to picking up steam. Starwood - parent to huge hotel brands including Sheraton, W Hotels, Westin and more - recently announced it's hiring more than 12,000 people to help staff properties in the United States and abroad.
Many of the jobs will be located at properties not yet opened, which means there is an opportunity to relocate to a place where you've always wanted to live. Don't limit yourself - think worldwide!
Want to work in Kuala Lumpur? There's a St. Regis opening there for that.
Have a passion for Paris? A W Hotel opens there next year.
The list goes on and on, and yes, there are plenty more "down-home" locales as well, such as openings in North Carolina, Nebraska and New Jersey. Starwood has an entire site dedicated to exploring what's in store where.

Overall, the hotlier will open 80-100 new hotels over the next year. Each property will need a small army of staff members to fill a wide variety of positions. here are jobs in general management, human resources, food and beverage, engineering and maintenance, housekeeping and guest services. Also, don't forget the benefits associated with working for a big hotel chain - in addition to standards like health and 401k, there are also travel perks. Starwood gives you discounted hotel stays and meals while traveling at sister properties.
The news can't come at a better time. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported a 10% unemployment rate in December - meaning there are more than 15 million people without a job.
"Today, the travel industry employs 7.7 million Americans - more than double that of the auto industry - and travel is uniquely positioned to create even more jobs as the economy continues to recover," said Fritts van Paasschen, Starwood's CEO in a statement announcing the hiring initiative.
Although there are a lot of jobs to be had, nabbing one won't exactly be easy. In 2009, Starwood had applicants applying in record numbers. In major cities like Los Angeles and Washington, DC, nearly 10,000 applied for about 400 positions. In a smaller Augusta, Georgia opening, 400 folks vied for 30 housekeeping positions.
Don't let the large numbers dissuade you. You have to be in it to win it - and with tranquil pools, frothy drinks and luxe restaurants - there are definitely worse places to spend your days.
