Future Employee? Likely a Past or Current Drug User!
According to a survey sponsored by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, almost one third of high school seniors reported using marijuana in 2009. The survey also noted increased usage of the drug over the high school years. This is our future workforce.
Wonderlic, Inc, a provider of employee and student recruiting, testing, and human resources consulting since 1937, has found consistent results with their own new human resources research.
The company's results found that 23.5% of current employees and potential job applicants had recently used marijuana, while 8.5% had used other illegal drugs.
Many companies require drug testing as a condition of employment. The US Department of Labor estimates that drug use in the workplace costs employers $75 to $100 billion dollars annually in lost time, accidents, health care and workers compensation costs.
The key is to be honest on job applications. Our current and past two Presidents admitted to using marijuana and they all still got their jobs.
The amount of time drugs will stay in your body depends on several things including age, body mass, metabolism, tolerance and overall health. Depending on the drug, it can be as short as one day or as long as a month. And under the Americans with Disabilities Act, an employer can refuse to hire you or can fire you if you use drugs illegally. If a drug screening is pending, get off the stuff...if you want the job, that is.
