Facebook users get 6 months of free anti-virus software
Facebook is teaming up with McAfee and is offering its 350 million or so users six months of McAfee's Internet Security Suite anti-virus software.
Recently Facebook accounts have been subjected to malware that ends up spamming user contacts, and Facebook says that offering this anti-virus and anti-spyware software benefits it as much as it does its users.
Apparently, both companies cited research which stated that as much as 78% of computer users don't have updated virus or spyware protection.
Facebook says it will not benefit financially from the free six-month subscription or any discounted subscriptions made after the six-month trial. (You knew that it wasn't always going to be free, right?)
After the six-month free trial, McAfee will offer the software at a "discounted price" which was not disclosed, although McAfee's Web site says a year subscription is $34.99. (However, the security suite retails on Amazon.com for $18.99 to $21.99.)
McAfee will offer the free six-month subscription on its Facebook page, or http://www.facebook.com/McAfee.
