EA CEO: "Digital games are important too"

Updated

John Riccitiello made a statement that shocked absolutely nobody when he said that purely digital games such as Facebook games were just as important as packaged games. Speaking to Reuters, Riccitiello stated that EA would be cutting down on its yearly retail game production from the 60 games of last fiscal year to the 40 for the next. At the Reuters Global media Summit, he had this to say.

It's our goal for [digital games] to be as important as, and over time maybe more important than, our packaged goods business.

Electronic Arts is obviously devoted to this statement, as they recently acquired social gaming developer Playfish to expand their influence into the realm of social games. There is no word on how many social games EA plans to publish in the years ahead.
