Dow enjoys another triple-digit rally ahead of earnings

Updated

Anticipation of better-than-expected third-quarter earnings sent stocks to a second straight session of strong gains Tuesday. Investors appear to be betting that the upcoming reporting season -- which unofficially starts after tomorrow's market close with Alcoa (AA) -- will exceed Wall Street estimates.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) rose 131points, or 1.4 percent, to close at 9,731, while the broader S&P 500 ($INX) gained 14 points, or 1.4 percent, to 1,055. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ($COMPX) added 35 points, or 1.7 percent, to finish at 2,104.
