App Store celebrates 2 billion downloads

Boasting 21,178 games out of the over 85,000 apps for iPhone or iPod Touch, Apple announced an even bigger number on Monday. Over two billion apps have now been downloaded from the popular App Store. Sure, that's just under one quarter of the total available applications but with games occupying the top free and paid spots on the App Store (we just counted 14 out of the top 25 apps as games), one could safely assume that casual games represent a large chunk of that download success.

While significant, Apple did not disclose how many of those downloaded apps were paid and which were paid. Given the recent explosion of free demo or "light" versions of new games, it's clear that game makers are trying several different ways to get noticed in a vastly crowded field. Still, with the volume of downloads and over 50 million App Store capable devices available worldwide, iPhone/iPod Touch's significance and impact can't be ignored.
