Stocks rise ever so close to one-year highs

Updated

Stocks posted broad-based gains Tuesday, pushing major indexes oh-so-close to notching one-year highs. A falling dollar, higher oil prices and some key analyst upgrades helped fuel the buying.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) rose 51 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 9,830, while the broader S&P 500 ($INX) added seven points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,072. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ($COMPX) rose eight points to finish at 2,146.

The dollar fell to a one-year low against the euro, boosting shares of energy and commodity stocks. Blue chip ExxonMobil (XOM) added 0.4 percent, while fellow Dow component Caterpillar (CAT) rallied 3.6 percent.
