Wrath Surrounds Steinbeck's NYC Apartment
Now, the fate of Steinbeck's apartment faces in-family, well, wrath suitable for a novel.
Here's the short version. Steinbeck was married three times. Although he died in 1968 his last widow, Elaine Anderson Steinbeck, died in 2003 at age 88. Since then his estate has been in limbo. His wife's death triggered a bitter family feud between Elaine's daughter (not a blood heir) and the children and grandchildren of second-wife Gwyndolyn Conger.
The suit claims a "30-year hidden conspiracy to deprive John Steinbeck's blood heirs of their rights." They are seeking $18 million dollars in damages. The apartment itself has 2,200 square feet of space and an asking price of $2.1 million, with the requirement that at least 50 percent be paid in cash. It is said to need remodeling costing an additional $250,000 and up.
