Steal This Idea! Vintage Frames
Derian is a wildly popular decoupage artist, a darling of design and fashion magazines, with two side-by-side shops in New York, that are both full of inspiration.
Every packed nook has something interesting to look at, but what grabbed my attention were the sweet and simple linocut prints by English artist Hugo Guinness. The black-and-white prints themselves are wonderful, from botanicals to quirky household items (underwear and vacuum among them) but it was the presentation that really caught my eye.
Guinness uses vintage frames to give each print a unique feel. And when hung together in an arrangement, the cohesiveness of the prints with a slight variation of frames is just the right visual interest for a wall. The same treatment could be given to black-and-white family photos or scenic travel shots. The trick here is finding just the right frames, but flea markets and thrift stores are a good place to start the hunt.
Here and here are good lists of flea and antique markets searchable by state.
