The newest music-rhythm game, Guitar Hero 5, hits stores today. But if you don't want to pony up the cash for the retail game (it ranges from $39.99 for the standalone game up to $99.99 for the game bundled with a plastic guitar), here are five similar beat games you can play right now, for free!

Jam Legend

JamLegend is a guitar rhythm game that allows you to jam like a rock star. With 15 songs, 4 difficulties and rotating bonus content JamLegend is the best way to rock out in your browser.

Our Recommendation:
Jam Legend is cute, simple and has a decent set of licensed band music (hope they sorted it out with artists' laywers!) - great artwork/graphics, too.

We Are Legend

Zombies, chainsaws, flamethrowers, and a hyena. Not just another Guitar Hero clone.
Play Now >

Our Recommendation: Whoa, talk about unexpected. This game is less about hitting the right 'notes' and more about well, killing the zombies that are heading towards you. We like it!

Super Crazy Guitar Maniac Deluxe 3

The crazy stickman is back with 14 new songs, 10 new guitars and new features!

Play Now >

Our Recommendation:
Simple graphics and a rockin' little stick figure in tow, SCGMD3 is addictive and even looks for save files so you can continue your progress each time you return to the game.

Feel the Beat

Feel the beat is a game that tests your music timing and coordination, using the keyboard like a piano you must hit the beats as they come down the screen.
Play Now >

Our Recommendation:
Much harder than the rest of the games because it simulates a piano keyboard instead of guitar, but great if you're not into rock music and want something a little more peaceful.

Oh and in case you're wondering if there's more to that Nirvana reference -- Kurt Cobain appears in the Guitar Hero 5 game as a playable character. Your call as to whether it's still too soon to make jokes about that.
