Updated

With investors looking ahead to a spate of earnings announcements by big retailers and a two-day meeting of Federal Reserve governors later in the week, stocks posted modest losses today. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 32 points, or 0.34 percent, to close at 9,338.

McDonalds (MCD), the only big corporation to release quarterly results today, rose the most of any of the Dow's 30 component stocks after saying that stronger coffee sales helped jolt earnings. The world's largest fast-food chain rose 1.94 percent.
