Jump in pending home sales lifts stocks

Inspired by data from the National Association of Realtors showing that pending home sales climbed for the fifth straight month, Investors bet on an economic recovery and sent stocks higher today. The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 34 points, or 0.36 percent, to 9,320.

Caterpillar (CAT), the world's largest maker of construction equipment, gained 6.1 percent, leading the Dow higher. All told, 16 of the 30 DJIA component stocks climbed.
