Contaminated teethers recalled by Nuby

Teethers sold under the Nuby, Cottontail and Playschool brand names have been found to be contaminated with bacteria and are being recalled by the children's product manufacturer Luv 'n Care, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

The teethers, which come a wide variety of shapes, were sold nationwide in a bubble package. A long list of the gel-filled teethers is being pulled from the market. Here is a list of the affected UPC codes.

Two lots collected by the FDA tested positive for the bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus circulan, the agency said. Consumers are urged to either return the teethers to the place of purchase or dispose of them. The bacteria was in the gel. The FDA said those bacteria don't usually cause illness, but children with compromised immune system could be vulnerable and suffer stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea if the teether is punctured and and they ingest the liquid.

The company has stopped distributing the teethers and is notifying its distributors, the FDA said. Those with questions can call the company at 800-256-2399, ext. 3106, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. central time.
