Stocks leap on Whitney's 'enormous' Goldman forecast

Updated

A handful of security analysts can move markets. Meredith Whitney, who left Oppenheimer & Co. (OPY) to start her own research firm earlier this year, is one of them. Her prediction that Goldman Sachs (GS) will disclose "enormous" revenue from its trading operations when it announces its quarterly earnings tomorrow sent financial shares and the broader markets soaring.

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 2.3 percent, or 185 points, to 8,332. Bank stocks were among the biggest winners, as Bank of America (BAC) rose 9.3 percent and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) surged 7.3 percent. All 30 Dow component stocks climbed.
