Mixed news, Roubini's gloom doom stocks
Sometimes it's obvious when news moves the markets. And sometimes it's a bit harder to tell. But when Reuters published a story late this afternoon quoting New York University professor Nouriel Roubini saying that "in addition to green shoots there are also yellow weeds" threatening any nascent economic recovery, it sure seemed to pull stocks lower.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 107 points, or 1.25 percent, to close at 8,505 after better-than-expected data on housing starts combined with the lowest-ever reading on factory utilization to paint a mixed picture of the state of the economy. Twenty-eight of the Dow's 30 component stocks fell, with only Microsoft (MSFT) and Pfizer (PFE) posting gains.
