Tech stocks' surge pushes Nasdaq higher, can't save Dow

Updated

Tech stocks zoomed higher today, but it wasn't enough to keep the Dow Jones industrial average in positive territory. The Dow slipped just over 1 point to close at 8,763 despite strong showings by Intel (INTC) and new member Cisco (CSCO), as well as Alcoa (AA) and American Express (AXP).

Surging technology stocks helped the Nasdaq -- which, unlike the DJIA and S&P 500, was never down during today's session -- post a gain of about 1 percent, to close at 1,860. It has climbed nearly 18 percent in 2009, while the Dow is just slightly below where it began the year and the broader S&P is up about 4 percent.
