Stocks fall as market can't sustain its rally for 5th day

Updated

Stocks were poised to extend last week's rally for one more day -- but then the tide turned in mid-afternoon trading and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 171 points from its intra-day high to close down slightly for the day. At the closing bell, it stood at 7,217 for a decline of 0.1 percent.

Citigroup (C) gained the most of any Dow stock, rising 31 percent to $2.33 after announcing the slate of new directors mandated by the government after its most recent bailout of the troubled company. Meanwhile, General Motors (GM) was the biggest loser, dropping 7.4 percent to $2.52. Tech stocks also fell as the Federal Reserve said industrial production fell for the fourth straight month, indicating a pull-back in business investment.
