Growth Matters: Dailymotion moves you with video
With all the gloom in the global economy, I got to wondering whether there is anything else going on in the world of business. I'm looking for growth because I think that's what will ultimately bring the economy out of the doldrums. Not surprisingly, that growth is coming from technology companies. In Growth Matters, I look at consumer technology companies that point the way to growth trends -- and in the process introduce services and products you may want to explore.
Do you like to produce your own videos and post them to the Web? Are you an advertiser seeking to broaden your reach to Web video? Do you like to watch unusual and creative video content? If so, Dailymotion may be worth checking out. According to a company spokesman, "Using the most advanced technology for both users and content creators, Dailymotion provides high-quality and High Definition (HD) video in a fast, easy-to-use website that also automatically filters infringing material notified by content owners."
As the spokesman said, "Dailymotion's mission is to provide the best possible entertainment experience for users and the best marketing opportunities for advertisers, while respecting content protection." But people can also produce and post their own content on Dailymotion. According to the spokesman, "With Motionmaker, there are different ways to use Dailymotion. You can be a regular user (a viewer or someone who shares video) or you can be someone that produces content that you want the world to see and be a Motionmaker."
Wonder how Dailymotion makes money? It sells advertising to companies seeking to reach its viewers, of which there are many. As the company spokesman said, "with over 38 million unique monthly viewers worldwide. Every day, over 15,000 new videos are uploaded into Dailymotion's global network of 18 localized video-entertainment sites."
What appeals to advertisers is the amount of time users spend watching Dailymotion content. As the spokesman explained, "Dailymotion's users spent almost 13 billion minutes viewing approximately 17 billion pages on the site. Dailymotion is the leader in engagement with users, averaging 10.8 minutes per session, which is 40% more than any other independent video sites."
