What a country! Drunk workers can't be fired in Peru

Worker's in Peru can't be fired for being drunk on the job, the country's top court has ruled.

The Constitutional Tribunal ordered that janitor Pablo Cayo must be given his job back by the municipality of Chorrillos after being fired for being intoxicated at work, Reuters reports.

One of the justices, Fernando Calle, said the firing was excessive because Cayo didn't offend or hurt anybody. Government officials denounced the ruling, saying it sets a dangerous precedent.

"We've fired four workers for showing up drunk, and two of them were drivers" Celso Becerra, the administrative chief of Chorrillos, a suburb of Lima, told Reuters. "How can we allow a drunk to work who might run somebody over?"

Just this week a worker at a world-famous Moscow museum is suspected of causing a fire when he fell asleep, drunk, while smoking a cigarette. Maybe Peru will start allowing sleeping on the job.
