Survey: The rock is always worth it

It turns out Wal-Mart isn't the only recession-proof business.

According a new survey, more than 60% of men and women believe an engagement ring is worth spending money on -- to the tune of 1-3 months' salary -- regardless of the economy. In fact, 10% thought that the ring should account for 10 months' salary. The good news is, 41% of the women said they would help pay for the wedding ring.

MarketWatch unearths more details from the report, like:

  • 94 percent of women say they preferred receiving a bright 3/4 carat diamond as opposed to a dull 1 carat diamond
  • Eighty-four percent of women believe a diamond ring represents more than an engagement – it indicates one's style and personality
  • Only 50% of men said they would be upset if their fiancee exchanged her engagement ring for a different model
  • Eighty-five percent of women were surprised when their boyfriends proposed and 15% had a feeling the question was about to be popped
