You've graduated: Now go shape your world

doorYou knew this day would come. It's your graduation day. Some of you will embrace it. Some of you have dreaded it. In either case, it's here now and you probably have only one thing on your mind; What do you do now!?!

I'll spare you all the flowery cliches and the over used "it's your world now" dogma. The fact of the matter is that you are entering a world as graduates, which is unlike anything anyone can reminisce about. Don't take it too hard that the road maps to life which we might provide for you are outdated and nearly useless to you. I suggest that the challenges before you are what your further education was really all about. If you had wanted to slip easily into a precut groove, you would probably have opted against furthering your education in the first place. However, you didn't avoid the challenge. For that I applaud you. Now, let's get down to brass tacks.

Begin the next phase of your journey by committing yourself to becoming immune to those who ascribe to the status quo. They are a slothful enemy and conventional wisdom is their weapon against you. They will try to convince you that you can't do things like harvesting hydrogen and oxygen from the atmosphere for use in fueling internal combustion engines. They'll tell you that providing electricity for entire cities utilizing just the power of the sun can't be accomplished. They'll try to sell you dead end ideas as foolish as saying that our planet is running out of fresh drinking water. They are rubes, slackers and ne'er do wells. "Profitability" is a brick wall around their static minds. Turn your backs on them and prove them wrong at every turn.

Get in the habit of biting off more than you can chew. Do it every chance you get. Those people who never do this are destined to always be taking little digestible bites of life -- and they are never truly satisfied. Live the big dreams. Take the impossible challenges. Risk yourself on worthwhile gambles when the odds appear insurmountable. If you do these things you'll sleep very well at night -- most of the time. I promise you that.

Say what you mean. Speak out when it's required. Don't leave anyone guessing about your intentions. The more that you do these things, the wider a path the world will make for you. Do you remember Nelson Mandela and Lech Walesa? They both thought great things and brought those ideas to action. However, understand that they each paid dearly for what they accomplished. Shun small thinking. It's a well-baited trap that's waiting for you.

Be true to yourself. Learn who you are and be your own best friend. Do whatever it takes to remain healthy in mind, body and soul. You are the one person who you'll have to spend the rest of your life with. Accept who you are and be continually polishing yourself. However, in the midst of this all, remember one most important truth: No matter what you have, what you accomplish, where you go, who you love, or what you believe in, understand that in an instant it can all be gone. Live with that truth emblazoned upon your heart. Once you reach that state of conscious existence which transcends all of the above, and which realizes that we really control nothing at all, then nothing can ever truly be taken from you and absolutely nothing will be impossible for you to accomplish.

Yes, it's your world now. Go ahead and show us all what you can do.
