Life in the fast lane: brainstorming a business idea

So you want to start a business, but you're not sure what industry to go into, especially if a recession is coming? Well, you're in luck. Here's my handy-dandy list of the fastest growing industries, trends, developments and anything else I could find that's fastest-growing. I did this by pouring through piles of data and interviewing 11,241 scientists, academics and movers and shakers. (Actually, I just googled "fast-growing" a lot, but close enough.) In case it helps you with brainstorming, in no particular order, here's what I came up with.

Fastest-growing economy: China
Who says? Everyone. It's common knowledge, but there you go, in case you forgot...

Fastest growing segment of the leisure travel industry: Adventure Travel
Who says? Hey, this is a shock. The Adventure Travel Trade Association

Fastest-growing form of garbage: E-waste. Think: broken TVs, computer monitors, cell phones and the like, all headed to landfills and incinerators. There's got to be a business that can make some money off this and save the environment.
Who says? These articles in The New York Times and The Oklahoman. I considered going to a garbage dump myself, one that isn't my office, that is, and checking on this problem, but then figured they probably know what they're talking about.

World's fastest growing extreme sport: Paintball. Well, maybe.
Who says?
Some article in India Times, and they don't list a source, but it is popular in 100 countries, and, you know, I think it sounds plausible.

Fastest-growing debilitating disease in the world: diabetes
Who says?
The Gulf-News, in this article, quoted an endocrinologist. I got a C+ in my college bioanthropology class. I'm not about to argue.

Fastest-growing cause of death in dogs and fastest-growing pet insurance claim:
Who says?
The Chicago Tribune, which wrote about it in this article.

Fastest-growing developmental disorder:
Who says?
Like the China reference earlier, everyone. I don't think this is disputed. But if you want another opinion, Lisa Finneran, a reporter at the Daily Press, in Newport News, Virginia, wrote a nice article about it.

Fastest-growing industry in America: healthcare. After all we've just talked about, are you surprised?
Who says?
The Occupational Outlook Handbook, which is put out by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Fastest-growing distilled spirit: tequilla
Who says?
Pace University, which put out a 2006 research report, predicting that tequilla will continue a previous 10 year trend, at least through 2010

Fastest-growing airport: Dubai International Airport
Who says?
Travel & Tourism News Middle East said so in this article.

Fastest-growing industry in the world: tourism. Soon, airlines will be getting rid of the seats and stacking passengers like plywood.
Who says?
The United Nations World Tourism Organization
