2007 Departures: House & Garden magazine
No, House & Garden never will go out of style. Its covers from 2001 and 1971 could be interchangeable, always maintaining an old-money aesthetic that was, nevertheless, eternally fashionable. No matter what the decade, this was the life that its readers (young and old, though mostly, old) wanted to live.
The staff learned that the magazine's December 2007 issue would be its last only in November; when the magazine had been (at least nearly) finalized and sent to press. 2007 was, amazingly, the magazine's 100th year.
House & Garden wasn't the only magazine to shutter in the last month of 2007. Martha Stewart's quite new Blueprint magazine (considered to be in the same "shelter" category of publications) was, in early December, closed down. The Blueprint name will continue as an occasional publication of Martha Stewart Living, however.
The shuttering of both titles was met with hue and cry by their faithful audience, although House & Garden's closing is far more poignant and sad for those of us who honored its classic style and elegant sensibility. Both will be mourned as icons of that person so many of us wished we could be.
