20 cities that are reopening from pandemic shutdowns and how to get jobs there now

Over the past nine weeks, 38 million people in the U.S. have filed for jobless benefits amid the coronavirus pandemic that has shut down businesses across the country. But as the country begins to reopen, companies are looking to hire new employees.

As of May 20, 37 states have begun to reopen their economies in some meaningful way. As states reopen across the country, check out companies hiring in their major cities for $100K+ jobs.

1. Birmingham, Alabama

Alabama’s stay-at-home order ended on April 30, at which point the state transitioned to a “safer at home” model. In the state, outdoor recreation areas have opened, retail shops have opened, restaurants and bars have opened, and personal care businesses like salons have opened.

Alaska’s stay-at-home order ended on April 24, among one of the first in the nation. In Alaska, outdoor recreation areas have opened, retail shops have opened, restaurants and bars have opened, and personal care businesses like salons have opened, and entertainment spaces such as libraries, theaters, bowling alleys, and museums are open as well.

Arizona’s stay-at-home order ended on May 15. In the state, outdoor recreation areas have opened, retail shops have opened, restaurants and bars have opened, personal care businesses like salons and barbershops have opened in addition to entertainment spaces like casinos.

4. Little Rock, Arkansas

In Arkansas, the governor announced a phased reopening plan starting on May 6 with the reopening of salons. Restaurants and entertainment spaces like theaters, stadiums, museums, bowling alleys, and casinos were next to open. Outdoor and recreation spaces will be opening soon.

12. Des Moines, Iowa

Iowa did not have statewide stay-at-home order, but restrictions were put in place. Many areas of the economy are reopened, but entertainment spaces and outdoor spaces will be reopened soon.

The stay-at-home order in Kansas ended on May 3, at which point a phased reopening was announced. Places of worship and restaurants are reopened, but bars, nightclubs, casinos and community centers that were scheduled to open May 18 will remain closed.

14. Louisville, Kentucky

Kentucky’s healthy-at-home has been in effect since March 26. Houses of worship, retail stores, and personal care spaces like pet grooming and boarding have reopened. Restaurants and personal care spaces like salons, barbershops, and tattoo parlors will reopen soon.

15. New Orleans, Louisiana

Louisiana’s stay-at-home order ended on May 15, at which businesses were allowed to open at 25% capacity.

Montana’s stay-at-home order ended on April 26, at which point reopening began in phases. Houses of worship reopened on April 26, retail stores opened on April 27, and restaurants and bars reopened on May 4. In Montana, schools had the option to reopen before the end of the school year. Some schools reopened beginning on May 7.

17. Boston, Massachusetts

Massachusetts’s stay-at-home order ended on May 18, at which point a four-phased reopening was announced. The first phase included houses of worship. The second phase will expand to include salons, offices and retail stores for curbside pickup on May 25.

18. Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minnesota’s stay-at-home order ended on May 17, at which point retail businesses were allowed to open at 50% capacity. Bars and restaurants in the state will remain closed until June.

Mississippi’s shelter-in-place order ended on April 27, at which retail stores were allowed to reopen with customer limits. Restaurants and casinos were also allowed to reopen with limits on amount of customers they could have at one time.

Missouri’s stay-at-home order ended on May 3, at which point all businesses, like large venues, concerts and movie theaters, are allowed to operate as long as social distancing is practiced and enforced.
