20,000-pound food donation boosts Salvation Army of Salem
Salvation Army of Salem on Friday received the first delivery of a donation of 20,000 pounds of food from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Salvation Army officials said the food will help food pantries in Columbiana, Mahoning and other nearby counties refill their shelves. “This donation comes at a critical time of the year as families face increased food costs, inflation continues to rise, and wages remain stagnant,” the Salvation Army of Salem said in a news release announcing the donation. A large crew of volunteers helped unload trucks that contained shelf-stable milk, rice, macaroni and cheese and assorted canned goods. According to Feeding America, a non-profit organization that works with more than 200 regional foodbanks that feed 46 million people, 12.9% of residents of Columbiana County are considered to be food insecure. Food insecurity is described as a condition in which people do not have access to sufficient food, or food of adequate quality, to meet their basic needs.
