2 students and 1 janitor injured in shooting at Idaho middle school, suspect arrested

A sixth-grade girl shot and injured two fellow students and a custodian at an east Idaho school Thursday morning, police said.

Cops said the unidentified student opened fire around 9 a.m. at Rigby Middle School, East Idaho News reported. She was detained shortly after the shooting started.

The victims’ injuries are not life-threatening, according to local news station KIFI. Cops have not yet identified the people shot.

Police said a teacher disarmed the girl and held her until authorities arrived, the Associated Press reported. It’s unclear how she obtained the gun.

Rigby Middle School, about 45 miles from the state’s eastern border with Wyoming, was evacuated, and students were taken to Rigby High School, the local fire department said in a Facebook post.

Police did not speculate on a motive for the shooting.

While the town of Rigby has only 4,100 residents, around 1,500 students attend Rigby Middle School, according to national education data.
