2 more people have died after stolen car crashes on Des Moines' south side

Two people transported to the hospital Wednesday after a stolen vehicle crashed have died, police said in a news release.

A third person remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police identified them Thursday as two 15-year-olds and one 18-year-old.

Another person, an 18-year-old, died at the scene.

The crash happened just before 1 p.m. Wednesday. An officer spotted a stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata near Ninth Street and Center Street and eventually saw it pull into MacRae Park, 1021 Davis Ave.

After a marked patrol car entered behind it, it sped off onto Davis Avenue eastbound. Officers did not follow in pursuit because they lost sight of the vehicle.

However, at 12:49 p.m., officers located the Hyundai crashed in the 600 block of Davis Avenue. Officers immediately requested emergency medical services and initiated lifesaving efforts, including CPR, the release said.

A preliminary investigation reveals the Hyundai was traveling eastbound on Davis Avenue at a high rate of speed, running the stop sign at Southwest Ninth Street and continuing eastbound, according to a news release. Evidence shows the vehicle struck a north curb, left the roadway, and struck a tree. All occupants were ejected from the vehicle.
