These 2 Mid-Illini Conference baseball teams advance to the 2024 Class 3A sectional

Here are the Peoria-area Class 3A baseball teams that advanced from the Illinois High School Association regional title games on Saturday.

CLASS 3A

Washington

  • How they won: Washington jumped ahead early and held off host Morton for a 7-5 win on Saturday. The Panthers (24-7) are in the sectional for the third time in four seasons, including back-to-back Class 3A state final appearances in 2021 and 2022. A three-run second by Washington helped add to the one-run game, putting the Panthers ahead 4-0. Three hits and a walk highlighted that frame including Brady Johnson's two-run double. Seth Harmon's solo homer to lead off the fourth made it a 5-0 game. Johnson then made it a 7-0 game off two-run scoring line drive to center. Morton (24-10), though, didn't go away. The Potters got on the board with a solo homer from Brandon Sieben to lead off the sixth, then scored four in the bottom of the seventh.

  • What's next: Washington faces Morris (26-3) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Washington Sectional semifinal.

Dunlap

  • How they won: Dunlap came back from a two-run deficit to beat East Peoria, 8-3. The Eagles are in the sectional for the first time in five years, making a 2019 Class 3A Elite Eight appearance during that season. That five-run outburst included three hits and two errors. Christian Ferrar's two-run single tied the game followed by Jack Piper hitting a go-ahead two-run double. Jackson Newton (two-run single) and Davis Weeks (RBI single) added some insurance runs as part of a three-run sixth inning. Donte Frantz picked up the pitching victory, striking out seven, scattering five hits and walking one in 3.1 innings of work. Curt Sosnowski was 3-for-4, while Owen Hidden added two RBIs for EP (27-8).

  • What's next: Dunlap faces Joliet Catholic (28-5) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Washington Sectional.
