2 Louisville cops shot in Breonna Taylor protests, police chief says

Two Louisville cops were shot Wednesday night in protests following the Breonna Taylor decision earlier in the day.

Interim Police Chief Robert Schroeder said shortly after 10 p.m. that the injuries were not life-threatening. One of the cops was undergoing surgery while the other was alert and in stable condition.

According to the Courier-Journal, one officer was reportedly shot below the bulletproof vest and the other took a bullet to the thigh.

Schroeder said a suspect was in custody.

“I am very concerned about the safety of our officers," explained Schroeder. “Obviously, we’ve had two officers shot tonight and that is very serious. It’s a very dangerous situation.”

Police are not releasing the name of the suspect or the wounded officers.

The shootings occurred before 8:30 p.m., according to the police chief.

“Praying for the two police officers that were shot tonight in Louisville, Kentucky,” tweeted President Trump late Wednesday. “The federal government stands behind you and is ready to help. Spoke to Gov. Andy Beshear and we are prepared to work together, immediately upon request.”

The FBI in Louisville stated that a SWAT team is assisting the police department.

A citywide curfew went into effect at 9 p.m., but many people were protesting past curfew.

In a direct appeal to demonstrators, Beshear urged them to go home.

“We know that the answer to violence is never violence and are thinking about those two officers and their families tonight.”
