19-year-old and mom killed in head-on crash with 18-wheeler, North Carolina cops say

A 19-year-old and her mom were killed when their car veered in front of an 18-wheeler in North Carolina, officials said.

The mother was driving on an Edgecombe County highway when the car went across the center line. The car hit a tractor-trailer head-on, Trooper Caleb Johnson with North Carolina State Highway Patrol told McClatchy News in a phone interview.

Both the driver of the car and her passenger died at the scene on Friday, Oct. 28, WITN reported.

Troopers identified the two as 50-year-old Veronica Williams of Farmville and 19-year-old Deasia Washington of Tarboro. Based on information shared at the scene and from the medical examiner, officials learned Williams and Washington were mother and daughter, Johnson said.

First responders evaluated the semitruck driver at the site of the crash, which was reported at about 1:15 p.m. on N.C. Highway 33. It happened on a stretch near the town of Princeville, roughly 75 miles east of Raleigh.

No one is facing charges in the deadly wreck, and alcohol and speeding aren’t suspected, Johnson said.
