There’s nothing quite as luxurious as donning a pair of silk pajamas before snuggling up in your ideal bed for the night. Silk is buttery smooth yet durable, gentle on the skin, and luxe, making it ideal for sleepwear.

To find the best silk pajamas available, we spent hours researching different options while weighing factors like materials, style, and care to make our final decisions. For expert advice on how to shop for silk pajamas, we consulted fashion stylist Audree López.

“Silk pajamas can improve the overall quality of sleep and make it easier to fall asleep," says López. "I personally wear silk or silk blended pajamas and use a silk pillowcase, and I have noticed better sleep quality—I’m not as hot while I sleep and I have less breakouts on my body from sweat or fabric friction.”

Whether you prefer a matching set or a flowy robe, the silk pajamas on our list prove that sleepwear can be comfy and stylish.

How to Shop for Silk Pajamas Like a Pro

Materials

There are many variations of silk, namely mulberry, Eri, Muga, and Tasar. López explains that “mulberry contributes to a majority (90 percent) of the silk production—the mulberry silkworm is the most popular.” Mulberry silk is known for its soft sheen, smooth touch, and hypoallergenic properties that are ideal for people with skin sensitivities.

“Other silk fabrics commonly used in clothing are charmeuse, chiffon, organza, silk satin, Crêpe-de-chine, [and] velvet,” says López. She recommends "regular silk or a more sheer silk blend like organza or chiffon if you need additional breathability,” but if you live in a colder climate, go with “Mashru, a woven blend of silk and cotton, [which] will be a thicker fabric blend for additional warmth.”

Aside from silk type, you can also judge the quality of silk by mommes, a unit that measures the fabric's density. Typically, silk is between 19–28 mommes, and the higher the number, the denser the fabric is—meaning better quality and durability. You may also notice silk grades while shopping, which is another way to categorize the quality of the silk. As with mommes, the higher the grade, the better the silk, with grade 6A rated as the best option.

Style

Just like regular pajamas, silk pajamas come in an array of different styles. You can find button-downs, long pants, shorts, nightgowns, robes, and more. The best type is highly individual and depends on your sleeping style, so consider whether you get hot or cold at night and what kind of climate you live in.

López suggests “a silk slip dress or cami with shorts” if you sleep on the warmer side, but “if you are looking for something cozier and run cold, opt for long sleeves and pants.” For added warmth, “you can also layer a silk robe or silk tie jacket over either option.”

“Silk is not a stretchy material, so opt for something a little looser on the body for comfort, breathability, and movement while sleeping,” López says. When shopping for silk pajamas, she says to “look for an oversized option or size up on a regular set for [a looser fit]." Consider looking for pajamas with an elastic waistband for added comfort."

Care

“Most silk is dry clean only,” López says, “but you can also hand wash cold in your sink with delicate-friendly liquid detergent and air dry.” Some silks are machine washable, so if the label gives the go-ahead, ”choose a delicate or gentle cycle with cold water and air dry.”

To hand wash, "fill a clean sink or small tub with lukewarm water and a small amount of delicate-friendly liquid detergent," López recommends. "Lightly agitate for three to five minutes and rinse well. If the care label advises machine washing, choose a gentle, cold-water cycle.”

Lastly, “do not iron silk—use a steamer to get rid of wrinkles if needed,” López says. “If you don’t have a steamer, you can let the item hang in your bathroom during a shower.”

Questions You Might Ask

What are the benefits of wearing silk pajamas?

López says that silk, in addition to being stylish, “is naturally hypoallergenic so it’s great for your skin.” It stays cool so you’re not sweating, which is ideal for hot sleepers. Silk also resists allergens that other fabrics, like cotton, cannot.

Are silk pajamas warm?

“Silk is a versatile fabric with a natural thermal regulator where it can keep you cool in warm weather but also regulate to keep you warm,” López says. However, if you run cold, you may prefer silk pajamas with long pants and sleeves to keep you cozy and warm.

What’s the difference between silk and satin pajamas?

While silk and satin have a similar look, they are entirely different fabrics. “The biggest difference between silk and satin is the production,” López explains. “Satin is man-made from nylon and polyester woven together. It is a thicker material with a slight shine on the outside…and can feel almost slippery.”

On the other hand, “silk is a natural fiber produced by insects as a material for their nests and cocoons,” as opposed to being man-made like satin. “Silk is known for [its] shine and softness, and pure silk fabric comes from natural protein so it’s smoother and softer than satin,” López says. In general, satin pajamas are less durable, and they will trap body heat and feel heavier than silk pajamas. However, because silk can be expensive, satin can be an affordable alternative.
