17 Things You Didn’t See on TV at the 2024 Golden Globes

Director Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Youssef pose in the press room at the 81st Golden Globe Awards.

Tonight we celebrated the 81st Golden Globes. 81st! Take a moment to wrap your head around that! It was a star-studded night, as it always is, with appearances from everyone from Ryan Gosling to Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Robert Downey Jr. and of course Taylor Swift, who seems to be nominated at just about every award show ever.

If you watched it live, you saw all the fun, with big winners The Bear, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Succession. But just because you watched the broadcast doesn’t mean you caught all the action. Parade was on the red carpet and in the pressroom bringing you all the behind-the-scenes action. From Taylor and Selena to Jeremy Allen White talking underwear and so much more, here are 17 things you didn’t see on TV.

Golden Globes 2024 Behind the Scenes

Mario Lopez gets starstruck

As the carpet began to wrap, the big stars made their way down. Everyone started screaming “Leo is coming. Leo is coming.” Everyone was excited, especially Mario Lopez. As Leonardo walked by, people all held up their phones to make videos. Mario Lopez came power walking down the carpet and hopped in front of Leo and asked him for a selfie. They took one, Leo shook his hand and gave him an atta boy and Mario walked away with a ridiculously happy face.

Jason Segel has a hot date…aww.

Jason Segel has been linked to some pretty big significant others like Michelle Williams. But it’s been a minute since we’ve seen the Shrinking star with a lady. He walked the carpet with his girlfriend Kayla Randomski whom he hasn’t been seen much in public with since the Internet found out they were dating in October. They linked hands tightly and looked at each other with lots of smiles as they made their way down the carpet.

Jason Sudeikis + Gayle King

Oprah arrived and was followed by many bodyguards and red carpet security guards. She created a huge commotion…because Oprah. Oprah was followed by Gale King and then Jason Sudeikis. Next thing you know, Oprah disappeared somewhere, and Gayle made her move, temporarily stealing her pal Oprah’s spotlight by popping into the Jason Sudeikis vicinity. Gayle saw Jason, linked arms with him, and they were instant bffs. They chatted for a long time, were laughing hysterically and walked into the award show together.

One proud mama

Bradley Cooper was most recently romantically linked to Gigi Hadid (lucky lady!) but it was his mother, Gloria Campano, who got to accompany him to the 81st annual Golden Globes. The son and mother duo posed together on the red carpet with the 6-foot-1 star towering adorably over her. Bradley’s mama seemed so proud to be by his side, and Bradley looked excited to have her there to celebrate his nominations for best actor and director for Maestro. The mother and son both dressed in black and were quite the eye-catching pair.

Martin Scorsese can’t get enough of the red carpet.

In lieu of a publicist, Martin Scorsese walked the red carpet with his daughter by his side. He was so proud to be there and mingled with everybody. Everywhere he went, people yelled out, “It’s Martin!” and took videos and pictures of him, selfies with him. Then, about a half hour later, he was back walking the carpet again. This is quite rare for a celebrity who usually can’t get off the red carpet and into the show to be so excited to be out there. It was really cool to see that after so many years in Hollywood, he’s still just as excited to be here.

JLo and Ben do the carpet separately.

First Ben Affleck arrives. He’s with his publicist and is busy schmoozing with execs and shaking hands as he makes his way down. He’s chatting with several of them about needing to get together to hang. He created quite the crowd around him until people noticed that Ryan Gosling was just ahead of him, and they shifted allegiances to Ryan. Then, one of the last big celebs to arrive was his better half. JLo arrived as they were shutting down the carpet, making her grand entrance even after Taylor Swift arrived. As seen on the broadcast, the two lovebirds later found each other inside.

Natasha Lyonne is going to party if she wins.

And she had one fun dress on to party in. When asked about the dress, she told Parade: “Just the idea that Daniel Schiaparelli was willing to dress me in anything that he wanted me in, I was just grateful to be a muse to a giant.” She then ran into May December director Todd Haynes, and they agreed they were going to hang later, afterparty style. He described her dress as “erect” as he attempted to hug her without getting injured by fashion. If you saw it, his description is fitting!

Ali Wong cheers on her Beef co-star

Ali was so excited that she won for Beef. But she seemed even more excited that her co-star Steven Yeum won. “I just screamed, and I had a really ugly face,” she said with a laugh. I really was genuinely surprised. She joked that she doesn’t know where she’ll put her award because “I have young kids,” implying that her 6- and 8-year-olds would love to get their hands on that shiny statue.

Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez have a major girl talk session

When the Globes went to a commercial break, the camera captured Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez sitting at a table together. They sat super close and whispered into each other’s ears and were having a serious and very long conversation like that. We can only hope they were sharing fun gossip about their high-profile beaus. Maybe a double date in their future?

Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner have a very Hollywood date night

We didn’t see Kylie on the red carpet, but she cleaned up nicely (doesn’t she always?) and snuck inside to join her man at their table inside the Globes. During the commercials, the cameras captured the two engaging in some major PDA at their table inside. She was running her hand up and down his shirt. They shared a sweet kiss. They seem to be doing better than ever.

Steven Yeun does kinda drive like his Beef character

When asked if he drives like he did in Beef, Steven joked and told reporters, “I live in LA. So, I drive the same, not that different from Danny, that’s not illegal.” He referenced Frozen in his acceptance speech and backstage, someone asked him how many times he’s seen it to which he replied, “I’ve actually only seen it twice, but we just saw it two nights ago at the request of Ruthie.”

Ayo Edebiri thinks she once had a great soul food meal in Chicago

After winning for The Bear, Ayo came back into the press room to talk to reporters. When asked what fun memories she had of getting to film in Chicago, she said: “Chicago has good food, really good food. There's a soul food restaurant that Lionel and I went to, and it had some of the best food of my life. We tried to find it again and it like disappeared. We just have no idea if it ever really existed or if we made it up. It was amazing!” She said the cornbread cupcake that was stuffed with pot roast mashed potatoes was next level!

Jeremy Allen White talks about that underwear ad everyone else is talking about

Jeremy Allen White won for The Bear, but the press was more interested in asking him about his Calvin Klein ad. When asked how it felt to have had his ad make such a big splash, he laughed and said, “It is strange. It’s been a weird couple of days. It is bizarre doing a Calvin Klein ad and now it is even more bizarre having it come out. But everything feels OK for now. Thank you.” When asked if he was more proud of Calvin Klein or The Bear Golden Globe, he blushed and said, “This. Prideful in both but this is more pride.”

Elizabeth Debicki took playing Princess Diana very seriously.

Elizabeth said she had to overcome a tremendous amount of fear to play Princess Diana on the final two seasons of The Crown. She clearly did the role justice, however, because here she is with a Golden Globe. When it came to prepping to be Diana, she said it came down to “a tremendous amount of research.”

“I watched a lot of footage, a lot. I unconsciously thought that the more time I spent with her the more, I’d be able to absorb something by osmosis,” she explained. To avoid the battle between self consciousness and self awareness, she set out to make sure was comfortable enough in Diana’s mannerisms so that she didn't have to think anymore. She spent a lot of time with a dialect coach and a movement coach, adding, “that was amazing to have two people mirror you while you were in that really vulnerable state of prep.”

So much fun with the Succession cast

Succession had big success tonight winning best TV drama and individual wins by Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen. Backstage, Matthew revealed that he chose not to read the script to find out that Tom was going to be the one who took over the company. Parade asked if he’d miss the moments between Tom and Greg, which fans loved so much, to which Matthew replied: “We stay in touch. We can have our own Tom and Greg private moments.” The next question was who was the tallest in the cast and crew. Matthew tried to say he was, but Nicholas Braun came running to the stage to challenge that because obviously Cousin Greg towered over everyone forever and always.

Sarah talked about how it was to work opposite Mr. Darcey from Pride and Prejudice as the significant other of Tom in Succession. She said, “Matthew is so different off screen than he is on screen. He’s the most leading man character actor I've ever met. He’s so different from Tom. But he’s such a lovely, lovely gentleman. A lovely man.”

Kieran Culkin talked about how his mother raised 7 kids in basically a studio apartment and continued on with his speech raving about how amazing she is. He joked, “We would be here without her and thanks not just because of the sex that she had of my dad.” Then he added, “you didn’t hear me thanking my dad.”

Paul Giamatti wants to do horror…with Howard Stern

There is one genre that Paul Giamiatti hasn’t done yet and that’s horror. “I love horror movies. In the time I was a little kid, they were the first movies I remember seeing. And so, they're deep. They go deep when you're little like that. I love all those old universal horror movies and all those kinds of things.” When he was older, he saw the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which he absolutely loves. “The sound, the cinematography, it's insane. It's an amazing movie. My favorite last shot in a movie,” he said. He also said he’d love to work with Howard Stern again. “I’m not kidding. I love that guy. He says he never wants to act. But if I could get him back… in a horror movie that's a good idea,” he proclaimed.

Emma Stone calls Taylor Swift an asshole

The Poor Things cast took the stage looking like they had been partying a little hard before making their way to the press room. When answering the first question, Emma got so excited that she waved her arms around and slapped the microphone accidentally, which she admitted was an end of the night party foul. When asked how it felt for Taylor Swift to be cheering her on so hard when she won, she sarcastically said: What an asshole, am I right? No, I’ve known her for almost 20 years. I was happy she was there. She was also nominated tonight, which was wonderful. What an asshole!”
