17-year-old girl dies in one-vehicle crash Saturday in town of Dexter

DEXTER – An investigation is underway into a one-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon that killed a 17-year-old girl.

The crash happened about 2:30 p.m. Saturday on State 80, near the intersection of State 54, according to a news release from the Wood County Sheriff's Office. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a vehicle engulfed in flames. Deputies attempted to put out the fire until units from the Pittsville Fire Department arrived on the scene.

An initial investigation found the vehicle was traveling north on State 80 and crossed over the southbound lane and into the shoulder and ditch area. The vehicle left the road and struck a tree, according to the release.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, Lucy K. Vanatta, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Pittsville Fire Department, Arpin Fire Department, Vesper Fire Department, Wood County coroner, Wood County Highway Department, DNR rangers and Nieman’s Tow Service.
