Teen, 16, arrested after Mount Vernon HS stabbing; second stabbing reported off campus

A 16-year-old male was arrested in connection with a stabbing at Mount Vernon High School Thursday afternoon.

Tim Allen, director of communications for the City of Mount Vernon, said a 15-year-old male student at Mount Vernon High School remains hospitalized but in stable condition. The student was stabbed multiple times during a fight among several students at the school around 2:45 p.m. in the first-floor hallway.

Mount Vernon schools Superintendent K. Veronica Smith said the school on Thursday did not allow people to leave or enter while police identified the suspect, a 16-year-old male Mount Vernon High School student, and arrested him. He is charged with second-degree assault and was remanded to Woodfield Cottage juvenile detention center.

A second stabbing occurred later Thursday at around 4:39 p.m. in front of the Hartley Park Deli at 210 Gramatan Ave.

Allen said a 13-year-old male sustained a stab wound to his left hip. The victim was brought to Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not yet located the suspect, believed to be a 14-year-old male, Allen said.

Information was not available Friday about which schools the second suspect or the 13-year-old stabbing victim attend.

“Our society as a whole is fractured, and our young people are not exempt,” Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said in a statement after the arrest related to the first stabbing. "This is an example of how social, emotional, family and mental health challenges are impacting our (young) people. The city will work with the Mount Vernon City School District and larger community to help our young people identify alternatives to violence in dealing with disagreements and conflict. We are praying for the speedy recovery of the injured student.”

Mount Vernon Police said anyone with information about either incident should contact the Mount Vernon Police Department's Detective Division at 914-665-2510 or submit an anonymous tip by texting "MVPD" and the tip to 847411.
