The couple landed on White Barn Inn and was immediately over the moon. “From the moment we checked in we knew we were in for a lovely escape. The staff were all so friendly and helpful (easy to call for a ride from the beach or get a recommendation for where to grab a bite downtown) and the rooms were luxurious and had quintessential New England seaside charm. This is a place that thinks about the details—every night there were little local treats with notes about the local vendor at our bedside. The pool was lovely and we spent most days ordering lobster cobb salads while lounging by the pool before grabbing some beach chairs and taking a short bike ride down to the beach. The fine dining was some of the best I have ever experienced. I know it sounds super basic, but I still tell people about the tomato tartare. You’re truly missing out if you don’t book a table at the restaurant.”

“If you’re looking for an idyllic weekend upstate that's plucked right out of a Hallmark movie, this is it,” raves Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay. “We stayed in a king suite in the main house and loved its stylish, no-frills, Scandi vibe. Plus, none of the rooms have TVs which really allowed us to unplug and spend uninterrupted, quality time together. The property as a whole feels cozy and inviting. Each morning we’d start the day with a freshly made breakfast complete with scrambled eggs, bacon and mini muffins. After a day of hiking and beer tasting at the local taproom (a stop at West Kill Brewing is a must, to this day it’s still my husband’s favorite brewery) we’d cap off each night with a craft cocktail at the Eastwind bar and lounge while casually playing chess next to a roaring fire. Also, it’s dog-friendly, a major win in my book. We can’t wait to go back and bring our pup along!”

The Dining Room (aka the hotel restaurant), is so romantic. It’s dimly lit with candles flickering, creating the coziest atmosphere. “I’ve stayed at Gurneys both in the summer and winter, and I’ll be honest, the latter is the way to go, especially for an intimate couples weekend,” says Maida. “While the Montauk resort is a favorite during peak Hamptons season (thanks to its beachfront cabanas, lively crowds and frequent events), it’s so much more relaxing and serene in the fall/winter off-season. I loved snuggling up with a coffee on my private balcony overlooking the waves and taking in the moody atmosphere of the beach. And there’s still plenty to do. I caught a complimentary workout class in the morning, then spent the day getting pampered at the Seawater Spa, which offers facials, massages and access to facilities like saunas and thermal baths. In the evenings, the al fresco patio lights up with fire pits and heaters so you can sip wine under the stars with the sound of the ocean serving as your soundtrack. If you’re looking to get back in touch with nature as well as your partner, Yohay highly recommends this stunning update getaway. “Secluded and submerged in nature––what more can you ask for? I stayed at Wildflower Farms with a group (which was a blast), but while there we saw so many couples that were clearly on their babymoon. Between the private cabins, gorgeous spa, relaxing atmosphere and proximity to NYC, it really is the perfect trip to take to celebrate a major milestone. I loved exploring the 140-acre grounds on foot, meandering through the rows of cabins while enjoying the mountain backdrop off in the distance. My favorite morning began with some of the best olive oil pancakes I’ve ever had at their main restaurant Clay and ended with a trip to the chicken coop to feed the hens (P.S. they love being held!). The service is also unbeatable with each staff member going above and beyond. Sidebar: I had a love affair with the strawberry jam they use in the restaurants and asked if they had jars available for purchase. The kind staffer told me no but that he would see what they could do. Later that day, I came back to my cabin to find three complimentary jars of jam with a personalized note...I mean come on! Top-tier service, without a doubt.”

Poet Ralph Waldo Emerson might be the inspiration for the hotel’s name, but things are decidedly more luxurious today in this part of the Catskills than they were in the late 1850s when he traveled throughout the wilderness of New York State with his cronies.
