1. Scribner’s Catskill Lodge (Hunter, NY)

Scribner's Catskill Lodge

  • Distance from NYC: about 2 hours and 15 minutes

  • Price Per Night: from about $280

  • Amenities: pool, sauna, restaurant and bar, garden, ice rink

Located in Hunter right near the popular ski resort, Scribner’s Catskill Lodge is one of the most glamorous hotels in the Catskills. Scribner’s, which originally opened in the ’60s, was recently restored into a trendy lodge with Brooklyn-meets-Alpine vibes. While the Catskills have an exciting restaurant scene, don’t miss a meal at Prospect, the hotel’s on-site restaurant, which serves delicious cocktails and rustic fare using locally sourced ingredients. I also love the outdoor firepits, perfect for making s’mores and watching the snow fall. While you might not want to leave the hotel, there’s plenty to do around Hunter, like skiing, exploring Kaaterskill Falls and antiques shopping in downtown Tannersville. The property is also dog-friendly, for those couples whose idea of a romantic getaway includes Fido.

3. White Barn Inn (Kennebunk, ME)

courtesy of The White Barn Inn

  • Distance from NYC: about 5 hours

  • Price Per Night: from about $550

  • Amenities: restaurant and bar, full-service spa, pool, guided beach horseback rides, movie nights

After her wedding in 2022, Audience Development Director Mary D’Alessio wanted a honeymoon that was closer to home, what with the uncertainty of covid at the time. The couple landed on White Barn Inn and was immediately over the moon. “From the moment we checked in we knew we were in for a lovely escape. The staff were all so friendly and helpful (easy to call for a ride from the beach or get a recommendation for where to grab a bite downtown) and the rooms were luxurious and had quintessential New England seaside charm. This is a place that thinks about the details—every night there were little local treats with notes about the local vendor at our bedside. The pool was lovely and we spent most days ordering lobster cobb salads while lounging by the pool before grabbing some beach chairs and taking a short bike ride down to the beach. The fine dining was some of the best I have ever experienced. I know it sounds super basic, but I still tell people about the tomato tartare. You’re truly missing out if you don’t book a table at the restaurant.”

Can’t want to stay there again!” Safe to say, this is “glamping” at its best.

5. Eastwind Hotel & Bar (Windham, NY)

Lawrence Braun

  • Distance from NYC: about 2 hours and 30 minutes

  • Price Per Night: from $299

  • Amenities: restaurant and bar, hiking, sauna, fire pit, bikes

“If you’re looking for an idyllic weekend upstate that's plucked right out of a Hallmark movie, this is it,” raves Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay. “We stayed in a king suite in the main house and loved its stylish, no-frills, Scandi vibe. Plus, none of the rooms have TVs which really allowed us to unplug and spend uninterrupted, quality time together. The property as a whole feels cozy and inviting. Each morning we’d start the day with a freshly made breakfast complete with scrambled eggs, bacon and mini muffins. After a day of hiking and beer tasting at the local taproom (a stop at West Kill Brewing is a must, to this day it’s still my husband’s favorite brewery) we’d cap off each night with a craft cocktail at the Eastwind bar and lounge while casually playing chess next to a roaring fire. Also, it’s dog-friendly, a major win in my book. We can’t wait to go back and bring our pup along!”

8. Urban Cowboy Lodge (Big Indian, NY)

courtesy of Urban Cowboy Lodge

  • Distance from NYC: about 2 hours and 30 minutes

  • Price Per Night: from about $300

  • Amenities: restaurant and bar, hiking, claw foot bathtubs

“If you combine the words ‘rustic’ and ‘luxury’ you’ll get the vibe of Urban Cowboy,” says Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida. “I felt like I stepped into my Yellowstone dreams in the bar and lounge area, which is decked out in Western textiles, wooden accents and even an antler chandelier. The Dining Room (aka the hotel restaurant), is so romantic. It’s dimly lit with candles flickering, creating the coziest atmosphere. The food (which is seasonal and locally sourced) was also a highlight.” There are multiple accommodation types, including rooms within the hotel as well as freestanding cabins and chalets if you want something more private. Maida adds, “I visited in the winter, so my favorite part was the dramatic stone fireplace at the center, which me and my companion cozied up to with cocktails in hand.”

9. Gurney’s (Montauk, NY)

courtesy of Gurney’s

  • Distance from NYC: about 2 hours and 50 minutes

  • Price Per Night: from about $695

  • Amenities: workout classes, full-service spa, fire pits, private beach, pools

“I’ve stayed at Gurneys both in the summer and winter, and I’ll be honest, the latter is the way to go, especially for an intimate couples weekend,” says Maida. “While the Montauk resort is a favorite during peak Hamptons season (thanks to its beachfront cabanas, lively crowds and frequent events), it’s so much more relaxing and serene in the fall/winter off-season. I loved snuggling up with a coffee on my private balcony overlooking the waves and taking in the moody atmosphere of the beach. And there’s still plenty to do. I caught a complimentary workout class in the morning, then spent the day getting pampered at the Seawater Spa, which offers facials, massages and access to facilities like saunas and thermal baths. In the evenings, the al fresco patio lights up with fire pits and heaters so you can sip wine under the stars with the sound of the ocean serving as your soundtrack. Throw in a pasta dinner at Scarpetta Beach and you’ve got the perfect romantic weekend.”

10. Wildflower Farms (Gardiner, NY)

courtesy of Wildflower Farms

  • Distance from NYC: about 1 hour and 45 minutes

  • Price Per Night: from about $800

  • Amenities: full-service spa, 140 acres to explore

If you’re looking to get back in touch with nature as well as your partner, Yohay highly recommends this stunning update getaway. Secluded and submerged in nature––what more can you ask for? I stayed at Wildflower Farms with a group (which was a blast), but while there we saw so many couples that were clearly on their babymoon. Between the private cabins, gorgeous spa, relaxing atmosphere and proximity to NYC, it really is the perfect trip to take to celebrate a major milestone. I loved exploring the 140-acre grounds on foot, meandering through the rows of cabins while enjoying the mountain backdrop off in the distance. My favorite morning began with some of the best olive oil pancakes I’ve ever had at their main restaurant Clay and ended with a trip to the chicken coop to feed the hens (P.S. they love being held!). The service is also unbeatable with each staff member going above and beyond. Sidebar: I had a love affair with the strawberry jam they use in the restaurants and asked if they had jars available for purchase. The kind staffer told me no but that he would see what they could do. Later that day, I came back to my cabin to find three complimentary jars of jam with a personalized note...I mean come on! Top-tier service, without a doubt.”

15. Emerson Resort & Spa (Mount Tremper, NY)

Emerson Resort & Spa

  • Distance from NYC: about 2 hours and 15 minutes

  • Price Per Night: from about $311

  • Amenities: outdoor hot tub, full-service spa, yoga and wellness classes, shops, dogs welcome

There are more than a few things that will make you fall in love with Emerson Resort & Spa (and each other, all over again) during a trip here: For one, all of the rooms have serious soaking tubs, big enough for a romantic bath à deux. Handsome rooms, like the Imperial Suite, also have their own individual fireplaces, and boast large living rooms and a lofted bedroom area so you can really stretch out.

Poet Ralph Waldo Emerson might be the inspiration for the hotel’s name, but things are decidedly more luxurious today in this part of the Catskills than they were in the late 1850s when he traveled throughout the wilderness of New York State with his cronies. What remains, however, is a beautiful, pristine 20-acre setting with plenty to entertain even the most fickle of lovers: Complimentary bikes; a legit spa with its own outdoor hot tub (which is currently operating under New York State guidelines); spots to chill out and take in the views at nearby Esopus River; the Insta-worthy Ashokan Reservoir, which provides water to the city; and much, much more. Bonus: It’s also a very quick, 5-minute drive to the Phoenicia Diner which you’ve been dying to eat at, too.
