15-year-old girl shot, injured at Massachusetts mall, 2 men in custody

A 15-year-old girl was injured in a shooting at a Massachusetts mall Friday afternoon, police said.

Cops in Braintree, Mass., detained two men, who were not identified, they announced in a tweet. The girl was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting was first reported around 4:45 p.m. Police initially suspected it was an active shooter situation, but later determined that two groups were fighting, Boston NBC affiliate WYCN reported. The girl, however, was not a member of either group and reportedly an innocent bystander.

Officials said the men, aged 21 and 20, fled the mall on foot after the shooting and were tracked down by police dogs, according to WYCN.

Police found six bullet casings in the mall, Boston CBS affiliate WBZ reported. They estimated the fight involved six or seven people.

The South Shore Plaza mall in Braintree, about 15 miles south of Boston, was briefly locked down until police located and detained the suspects. It’s scheduled to reopen at 11 a.m. Saturday.
