The 15 Best Jute Rugs to Brighten up Any Room

Made with the same plant fibers often found in your favorite straw bags, jute rugs are versatile home decor that can create warmth and texture in any space. With their thicker pile and earthy color palette, they can be used to ground an eclectic bedroom or living room, create dimension in a minimalist kitchen, or even offer a rustic touch to a Mediterranean-inspired den. In fact, they’re a favorite among interior designers for their adaptability.
"I use jute rugs in my projects all the time," says designer Analisse Taft. "I love to use them as primary flooring and layer vintage rugs on top. I also find it helpful to use them in areas where I don't have a healthy budget because they are priced well, and you can get a lot of bang for your buck."
As added benefits, jute rugs are exceptionally sturdy yet surprisingly soft. "What I love about them is how they can patina with age," Taft notes. "They have a beautiful worn-in look when used over time." Due to their looser weave, Taft says that jute rugs tend to be more comfortable than other natural fiber styles—like those crafted with sisal.

Are there any downsides to jute?
Despite their many benefits, jute rugs do have a few drawbacks to consider. For one, the natural material is notoriously prone to fraying and shedding. To preserve the original look as long as possible, Taft recommends placing jute rugs in low to medium traffic areas, and away from stairs. If you can't resist placing one in a living room or kitchen, however, she suggests "using a darker-colored style in those areas, as they won't show wear and dirt so much."
Additionally, jute rugs require special care, so if you're looking for something super low-maintenance, these may not be your best options. It's important to note that jute rugs can only be spot-cleaned. And since their fibers are naturally absorbent, they must be fully aired out in the sun to dry to prevent any mold or mildew from forming.
