Picture this: You're exhausted. You crawl into bed, ready to drift off to sleep for a restful eight (or more) hours. But your plans are quickly foiled when you start tossing and turning in a pool of sweat. You’re suddenly making frequent trips to the thermostat to tinker with the AC—all while kicking off the covers and driving your partner insane. Sounds miserable, right? Anyone who suffers from night sweats and hot flashes will recognize this scenario. Yet, if you’re a hot sleeper—and you’ve tried cooling comforters and cooling sheets that never seem to make a difference—you might benefit from investing in a cooling mattress, which uses phase-changing materials that help regulate temperature throughout the night.

Still, we were skeptical: Can cooling mattresses really make a difference for hot sleepers? (After all, it’s a significant splurge compared to a summer blanket and a tower fan.) So, we had our editors test top brands like Saatva, Casper and TemperPedic—and scoured the web for the absolute best cooling mattresses on the market—to help you decide what’s worth it.

The Best Cooling Mattresses of 2024

How We Tested the Best Cooling Mattresses

We had our editors test seven top-rated cooling mattresses for at least one month, including memory foam options from TEMPUR-Pedic and Nectar, hybrid mattresses from Casper and Saatva and a latex option from Avocado Green. (We also had them test two budget-friendly options from Amazon.)

Then, we scoured the web for other cooling mattresses people seemed to be raving about. After hours of sifting through product specs and reviews, we vetted each option based on what cooling materials they used—including gel- or graphite-infused memory foam, latex or wool—how thick they were, what type of sleeper they’re best for (side, back or stomach) and whether they had a 30-plus-day return policy.

1. Casper Wave Hybrid Snow

Casper

This foam and coil hybrid mattress has it all. It offers sufficient back support while still feeling super plush and cozy and has layered cooling technology that provides a six-degree cooler sleep which will help you have a deeper and better-quality rest. Plus, it includes Casper’s signature HeatDelete Bands, which are designed to remove excess body heat at a higher rate than their previous models creating cooler sleep for over 12 hours. It also has a cool-to-touch surface upon crawling into bed thanks to the QuickCool Cover top layer.

Take it from PureWow assistant editor Sydney Meister, who says: “The temperature-regulating foam has made a noticeable impact on my night sweats…I no longer look like I came from a sauna session when I wake up, and the surface is chilled to perfection when I crawl in at night.” She also adds, “I also love how it has a Goldilocks feel for side-sleepers. It’s soft under your shoulders so you can sink in, but it’s firmer around the hips, waist and lower back so I don’t wake up feeling achy.”

2. TEMPUR-Pedic TEMPUR-Breeze LuxeBreeze Mattress

Tempur-pedic

There’s no doubt you’re familiar with the luxurious qualities of a Tempur-Pedic. Yet, what makes this number so unique (aside from its famous NASA-developed foam) is that it’s formulated with a TEMPUR-CM comfort layer, which was specially designed in a thermal laboratory to help manage the climate between your mattress and your covers. The foam is infused with cooling fibers and premium ventilation to enable better airflow, while the cool-to-the-touch SmartClimate cover adapts and adjusts to your body’s temperature throughout the night. Plus, it’s available in a soft, medium hybrid or firm feel—and you can choose from ProBreeze or LuxeBreeze cooling which has a five-degree difference (we had our editors compare both in this PureWow100 review).

And if you’re hesitant about the (not so inexpensive) price, PureWow executive editor, Dara Katz says it’s worth every penny. “Come summer, my husband usually blasts the AC to arctic temperature while relinquishing all bedding to me…With this mattress, though, he snoozes while cocooned under our comforter like a cozy little caterpillar. (I've literally never seen him cuddled up with the bedding.) All this is to say: the cooling element works. The LuxeBreeze is marketed with a 10-degree cooler promise. And by George, does she live up to the promise. The mattress is not only miraculously cold to the touch, but it actually stays cool for as long as you’re in it.”

3. Saatva Classic Mattress

Saatva

If you’re someone who’s been noticing aches and back pains that were never there before, this mattress perfectly pairs body-supporting elements with breathability. It’s made from five innovative layers of comfort with extra quilting at the top for lumbar support and responsive coils with chiropractor-approved memory foam at the bottom. Most importantly, its base is designed with a dual-coil system that allows for more airflow to help disperse body heat and prevent you from feeling slurped down into it.

“Previously, I’ve enjoyed the feel of memory foam mattresses but found them hot. The Saatva Classic has a top layer made of breathable organic cotton and three-inch pillow-top cushiness, so I’ve never overheated,” writes PureWow Senior Editor Dana Dickey in a PureWow100 review. As for the feel? “I’ve noticed I regularly dream more, which leads me to believe I’m sinking faster and longer into recuperative REM dream state. (Previously, this only happened when I forgot to take my anti-anxiety medication for a couple of nights.) I wake up feeling more refreshed, and I drift off to sleep faster, since I’m not tossing and turning to feel comfortable,” Dickey notes.

4.  Nectar Mattress

Nectar

This is a memory foam favorite. It has a quilted cooling topper that is extremely breathable, and it contains five layers of different materials designed to not only cool but relieve pressure, contour your body, support, stabilize and protect against wear and tear. The gel-infused foam is also great for ensuring you don’t feel your partner tossing and turning through the night, and two pillows, a mattress protector and sheets are included with every mattress purchase (at no extra cost), so you get more bang for your buck.

In a PureWow100 review, former PureWow editor Kara Cuzzone writes: “First of all, the mattress’ five layers are designed to relieve common pressure points for a difference that I can actually feel when I lay down after a long day. Plus, its gel memory foam ensures that body heat gets distributed evenly throughout which is a total game-changer for hot sleepers like me. Those factors, combined with its medium firmness ensure that I sleep straight through the night and wake up feeling like I just got 10-plus hours of sleep in a luxe hotel bed.”

5.  Cocoon By Sealy The Chill Mattress

Sealy

New to Cocoon by Sealy’s collection, this hybrid mattress features a premium stretch-knit cover infused with Phase Change Material that helps you fall asleep faster at a cooler temperature. Under the cooling cover, there are three other layers of memory foam, coiling and support, all making for a bed that’s neither too soft, nor too firm, according to most reviewers. “I’m a hot sleeper—as in, my sheets turn yellowish because I sweat—and I was frustrated because I couldn't use white sheets…I've slept on this mattress now for over a month and I can honestly say, I don't think I've sweat even once,” one online shopper reports.

Its pressure-relieving memory foam and premium coils also work together to offer improved airflow, while the premium knit cover offers a cool-to-touch surface that can regulate your temperature as you sleep (aka the best of both worlds). “I like my mattresses on the firmer side, but not hard as a rock. This mattress is a six out of ten on the firmness scale in my opinion. Perfect for most people,” the shopper adds.

6. Puffy Lux Mattress

Puffy

This hybrid has amassed more than 12,500 enthusiastic reviews online from numerous shoppers remedying that concern (and beyond). It’s endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association, which means it's up to the highest standards in terms of support for your spine and back, and it has eight layers of premium memory foam with a base of contouring coils that adapt to your posture. Not only that but it gets cooling points for the specialized top layer—which is infused with gel to disperse heat away from the body—and the quilted cover which is engineered with a cool-to-the-touch feel.

To that end, one independent testing company reported that the overall temperature of the mattress did not exceed 85.3 degrees Fahrenheit 15 minutes of use. “The hybrid design improves breathability, as does the absence of memory foam. In our cooling tests, the temperature of the mattress dropped 8 degrees from minute 0 to 1, and overall, I’m pleased and impressed with Puffy’s ability to reduce and release heat,” backs Derek Hales, founder of NapLab.com. The cherry on top? It comes with two Puffy pillows, which also have people obsessed.

7. GhostBed Luxe

Ghostbed

After seeing Ghostbed’s claim that this is the coolest mattress in the world, we had to see what all the fuss was about. What makes it unique is the patented Ghost Ice Fabric cover, which features cooling properties woven directly into the yarns. Then, directly below the cover, there are layers of gel memory foam infused with Ghost Ice technology, which is designed to sense heat and adjust throughout the night. This helps to temper how body heat naturally gets trapped within the layers of other memory foam mattresses; it uses phase-change material that absorbs this heat and prevents it from reaching the core. Plus, it’s engineered to offer a medium feel that’s great for combination sleepers.

One Ghostbed reviewer raves, “We live in the Mojave Desert, where it gets up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and up to 80 degrees in December. My partner and I are also very warm-blooded and get hot while we sleep. So far, I have not woken up in a sweat with this mattress once. The cover is very cold to the touch, and when you get in bed, it’s a bit chilly but quickly adjusts to your body temperature—and stays there.” They also love how the medium feel is firm enough to offer edge support (without being too hard): “Our not-so-old pillowtop mattress was already sagging and would swallow you whole making you sweat and burn like you were sleeping in an oven…Ghostbed has a very firm edge and does not sink flat when you sit on it with all your weight. Very soft but also very firm!”

8. Avocado Green Medium Mattress

Avocado green

ICYMI, latex is one of the best natural cooling materials on the market—and this one combines all of the benefits of latex’s open-cell structure with a medium feel that’s great for side sleepers. Basically, the mattress is known for three standout features: a hybrid Dunlop latex rubber foam innerspring, which is naturally antimicrobial, a breathable cotton cover and its wool filling, which is known to wick away moisture and be flame-retardant. “It also doesn’t seem to trap heat thanks to that aforementioned [latex and] wool, which, believe it or not, has cooling properties, despite the fact that we live in Florida, where it’s perpetually 90 degrees,” says former PureWow editor Nicole Briese in a PureWow100 review.

It’s also worth mentioning that the mattress has a sturdy five-zone coil system, which is not only designed to distribute weight evenly but also to alleviate pressure points in your hips, spine and shoulders. “From the very first night I slept on this mattress, I knew my days of hip agony were over. I put my full weight on my side and waited for the familiar stabbing to come—but none did. The medium-firm cush of the Avocado Green with a pillow top offered a just-right level of support for my aching sides,” Briese adds.

9. Zinus Green Tea Mattress

Zinus

Why this mattress has racked up a 4.5-star rating with more than 74,000 reviews on Amazon? First, it’s easy on your wallet and starts as low as $127 for a Twin, but more importantly, it’s made with layers of green tea-and-charcoal-infused memory foam, increasing thermoregulation. It’s also great for anyone with a unique sleeping style—from stomach sleepers who roll all over the place to side sleepers who dig their hip into the mattress—where it includes thick layers of memory foam, which are available in a 6-, 8-, 10- or 12-inch thickness. Plus, it comes with a breathable knit cover that helps to dissipate heat.

Jillian Quint, PureWow Editor-in-Chief, says: “We got this mattress for a kids' bunk bed in a small room with very little airflow. I was concerned about my hot-as-a-radiator son burning up on the top bunk, but this guy keeps him cool as a cuke, even on warm nights.” Add to that the fact that one Amazon reviewer raves, “I am blown away at how cool this mattress sleeps. My sheets get just warm enough to keep me at a comfortable room temp throughout the night, but I don't wake up drenched in sweat anymore because of the oven that would form between my sheets with my old mattress. It's probably the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on, in respect to temperature and breathability.”

10. Molecule 2 AirTEC Mattress

Molecule

What makes this mattress different from other memory foam constructions (that are known to trap heat)? It’s constructed with proprietary AirTEC foam, which has a ventilated design that allows for unmatched airflow. In fact, according to the brand, the foam has been lab-tested and clinically proven to promote oxygen increase while improving circulation and breathability throughout the night. Beyond that, however, it also features an extra-plush quilted top with an antimicrobial treatment, so the sleep surface helps wick away moisture (while being great for anyone with allergies).

One happy Molecule customer writes, “I originally decided to purchase this mattress for its breathability, and I am pleased to say, my sleeping temperature is far more consistent. I am not throwing my covers on and off like I was before.” They also say, “It has helped my shoulders to open up so much; it’s a firmer mattress that offers contouring support. It’s almost trained me to sleep more on my back, which seems to be better for my alignment, and I have noticed fewer trips to the Chiropractor since having this mattress for almost 100 nights.”

11. Serta Arctic Mattress

Serta

With a “Reactex System” that provides 15 times more cooling power for the ultimate chill, Serta says it created a mattress that’s just as comfortable as it is temperature regulating. It features a unique three-part cooling system that pulls heat away from your body and deep into the mattress—and it even includes “EverCool” gel memory foam that will make you feel cradled in an icy embrace. And while many reviewers prefer the firmer feel (especially stomach and back sleepers), you also have a plush option, which is ideal for side sleepers.

One Wayfair reviewer says, “The cooling material has helped me tremendously; I’m finally sleeping without my bed fan, and I just sleep with the AC on…this factor is definitely keeping my body cool throughout the night.” They also mention: “Another thing I love is that I no longer wake my husband up when crawling into bed at night. The memory foam transforms around your body and makes it bulletproof to minimize motion transfer when crawling on the opposite end of the bed.”

12. ComforPedic Loft by Beautyrest Mattress

Comforpedic

Beauty Rest is known for their plush but firm mattresses, and this one leans more toward the firm side. But what really makes it stand out is the layers of memory foam that are topped with three inches of gel foam to increase cooling and airflow—all while the other layers work to bring support and comfort. The cover is also moisture-wicking, and the base has a low-motion transfer construction, which is great for anyone who shares a bed with a wiggly sleeper.

After a year of sleeping on this mattress, one tummy and side-sleeper says, “It is so comfortable and stays cool! Weight distribution is great, no movement when I get out of bed. I feel rested and no aches.” Plus, another shopper adds, “I am menopausal and have frequent night sweats and hot flashes. [Switching to this mattress] has really helped with hot flashes…I’ve slept through the night, every night since we bought it.”

13. DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid Mattress

Dreamcloud

Here, a go-to mattress for couples who can’t agree on firmness. While the base is constructed with individually encased coils and a foam foundation—giving it a firm-solid feel—it’s balanced with five layers of cushy memory foam for soft, contoured body support. More importantly, it includes a gel memory foam layer with innerspring coils that work together to neutralize any stuffiness or heat retention happening under the covers for a cool, comfy sleep. It’s also available in three models—including the hybrid, the premier hybrid and the premier rest hybrid—so you can upgrade the hybrid with a plush pillowtop and extra layers of pressure-relieving technology.

One Dreamcloud user says, “Temperature regulation was a concern for me, but the hybrid design truly delivers. I stay comfortably cool throughout the night, thanks to the excellent airflow provided—no more waking up feeling overheated or sweaty!” They also mention: “The motion isolation is remarkable. I can sleep soundly without being disturbed by any movements from my partner. Plus, as someone who struggled with finding the right balance between comfort and support, this mattress has been a game-changer. Whether I'm on my back, side or stomach, it effortlessly adapts to my body, ensuring optimal spinal alignment and relieving any pressure points.”

14. Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress

TUFT & NEEDLE

Looking for a mattress that, even when you do sweat, is super easy to clean? This one has a removable, machine-washable cover that makes it easy to keep the mattress in ‘mint’ condition (no pun intended). It’s made from three foam layers with ceramic cooling gel beads and graphite that keep your body temperature neutral, and adaptive foam contours to your sleep style to prevent tossing and turning. Even better; it has antimicrobial protection to help prevent degradation from microorganisms and avoid any bacteria growth.

After a month and a half of use, one Tuft and Needle user writes: “I immediately noticed how cool the mattress keeps us. My fiancé used to sweat every night on our old mattress and hasn't had that problem once since sleeping on the T&N Mint. Also, it's SUPER comfortable for side sleeping and has helped my back tremendously.” As for the cover? Another reviewer reports: “It washes very nicely and doesn't require much dryer time. It also doesn't hold onto heat and it’s plush and soft to the touch (versus competitors’, which make crunching noises and aren't as soft).”

15. Classic Brands Cool Gel 2.0 Mattress

Classic brands

Finally for a boxed bed that sounds too good to be true, but take the word of 13,700-plus reviewers: It’s the real deal. It features a gel memory foam layer at the top for temperature regulation you can feel at the surface, along with two extra layers of high-density, ventilated foam that offers maximum plushness with a sinkable feel. The memory foam not only conforms to your body and regulates heat with a porous, open-cell design, but the stretch knit cover also helps to wick away moisture while increasing breathability and circulation.

Assistant editor Sydney Meister backs this, saying: “While the gel-infused foam offers maximum ventilation (aka sweat-free nights), its high-density foam layer conforms to your body and relieves pressure points. Not only did it have the plush, sink-into-me effect I was looking for, but it does exactly what it says: Keeps me cool all night long.” That said, it’s also worth mentioning that this mattress might be prone to sinking over time (Meister has flipped it twice in the two years she’s slept on it). “However, for the price—coupled with the fact that it comes with two cooling pillows—I personally don’t mind the extra legwork.”

What to Look For in a Cooling Mattress

While shopping for a new cooling mattress, you need to take into account the type of mattress you prefer to sleep on (see below) and you should also understand what each cooling mattress feels like in terms of bringing down body heat. For example, one mattress may have a cooling cover—which will feel colder to lie on—while another may have wrapped wire coils within the mattress, which increase airflow for a chilling effect that’s not quite as immediately apparent.

Here are a few specifics to keep in mind:

How Do Cooling Mattresses Work?

Cooling mattresses are made with special features (like gel memory foam, latex or gel-infused beads) that are meant to absorb heat from your body, wick away moisture, and deter sweating or high body temperatures. They’re also engineered to increase airflow on the surface of the mattress (more on that below), since having a cooler sleeping environment has been proven to help people fall asleep more quickly and have a more restful slumber.
