A 14-strikeout game, 2-hat trick week and title-winning plays in Athlete of the Week poll

Last week, spring sports regular-season play came to a close and conference tournaments for baseball and softball began.

Both Cape Fear softball and baseball pushed through the United 8 Conference to gain the U8 championship for the second season in a row with shutout wins.

Terry Sanford baseball battled through the All American Conference tournament for another AAC title — its 11th over the last 13 seasons — and Freedom Christian baseball and softball dominated the NCISAA Sandhills Conference tournaments on both sides.

After a slew of great performances in conference tourneys, nine nominees grace this week's ballot. Here are the nine nominees along with their accomplishments for the week.

CAPE FEAR, TERRY SANFORD BASEBALL: Cape Fear, Terry Sanford baseball repeat as U8, All American Conference champs

Jayda Angel, Cape Fear - Angel resumed her dominance on the field this season for the Colts. In three matches last week, Angel scored three goals on Tuesday vs. South View and put up three goals that resulted in seven points, along with one assist vs. Gray's Creek.

Eli Corney, Freedom Christian - Corney continued to have an elite season on the bases. In the Patriots' Sandhills Conference title win, Corney scored two runs while stealing five bases on Friday night.

Allie Dawson, Cape Fear - Dawson was superior at both sides of the plate for Cape Fear against Lumberton in the United 8 title game on Friday. While the Pirates were shut out, Dawson scored the game's only run and notched a game-high three hits in the 1-0 win.

Chandler Garner, Westover - The Wolverines senior did not disappoint in the Jackie Robinson Showcase on Friday. In the 13-2 win over Douglas Byrd, Garner threw 14 strikeouts and allowed only one hit in six innings pitched. He also excelled at the plate with a home run, five RBIs, and three runs scored.

Rylan Miller, Freedom Christian - Miller continued her amazing season in the circle for the undefeated Patriots. The Marshall commit gave up only two hits and retired 18 batters at the plate en route to the Sandhills Conference title.

Kaylen Sykes, Pine Forest - Sykes took over on the soccer field for the Trojans on Friday in the final regular season game. The sophomore scored three goals in a shutout win over Westover.

Olivia Melvin, Cape Fear - Melvin put up a stout performance in the circle on Friday in the United 8 championship game vs. Lumberton. The senior struck out eight batters and allowed only three hits in a shutout win to secure the U8 title.

Josh Mozingo, Terry Sanford - Mozingo had an all-around impressive outing in the Bulldogs' AAC championship win over Harnett Central. The relieving pitcher pulled off a double, a solo home run, two RBIs at the plate, and saved the game at the mound in the sixth inning.

Jayden Simpson, Seventy-First - The senior pitcher shined for the Falcons in their final game of the season at the Jackie Robinson Showcase. Simpson hit his first home run of his career and brought in three RBIs in the 16-4 win over E.E. Smith.

This week's voting will conclude on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 a.m.

Coaches and athletic directors can nominate a player for athlete of the week by sending nominations to jfmoore@gannett.com by noon Sunday. Include the player's name, year in school, accomplishments for the week and a headshot.
