A 14-year-old high school student was found dead in a kitchen after multiple shots were fired into his home, according to a South Carolina sheriff’s office.

One person or more targeted the Belton home in a drive-by shooting just after 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 23, Shale Remien, a spokeswoman for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, told McClatchy News.

Remien said multiple bullet holes were found on the house, but it was unclear how many shots were fired.

The Anderson County Coroner’s Office identified the teen as Elijah Delbert Allen Sergent. An autopsy is scheduled for Feb. 24.

Sergent was a student at Palmetto High School in Williamston, Remien said.

A spokesman for Anderson School District One said in a statement that he was a ninth grader. Counselors have been sent to the school to support teachers and students.

“The Palmetto High School family is shocked and saddened by the student’s passing, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family as they endure this terrible tragedy,” Palmetto High School Principal Robby Roach said in a statement.

Belton is about 100 miles northwest of Columbia.
