All 14 Dundee entries move through to Wrestling Regionals

DUNDEE — It will once again be a full-team party for Dundee’s wrestling team in the Individual Regional Tournament.

All 14 Vikings pushed their way through to the Division 3 Regional at Hazel Park during the District that Dundee hosted Saturday.

“We wrestled really well today,” said Garrett Stevens, who co-coaches Dundee with Nate Hall.

Not only did all 14 advance, but every Dundee wrestler reached the finals Saturday. The four who didn’t win District titles defaulted to teammates in the finals.

Those officially were listed as injury defaults, but Stevens said that no one is actually hurt. The Vikings didn’t want teammates competing against each other.

“At this time of year, we just want to focus on being healthy and the end goal,” he said.

Picking the 14 to compete in Districts is a tough task for Stevens and Hall.

“It’s the worst day of my life every time I have to do it,” he said. “Every kid deserves a chance.”

Dundee has 18 wrestlers on the roster who are currently ranked among the top 10 in the state at their weight class. Only 14 can compete in the District.

Trey Parker of Dundee looks to takedown Joshua Rose of Ida in the 150 pound semifinals match in the D3 individual districts at Dundee High School Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. Parker went onto pin Rose and forfeited to his teammate Donny Beaufait in the finals.

The others lose their shot at individual state titles.

“We’re the only individual sport where you are limited,” Stevens said. “In track, you can have eight people qualify in an event if they are good enough. Our sport caps the registrations.”
