How to Shop for Robes Like a Pro

“There are so many options when it comes to materials,” says Palep. “I recommend silk, cotton, micro modal, jersey, lace, sheer tulle, and cashmere.” When deciding on a material, consider what you’ll mostly be doing in the robe. If you plan to use it straight out of the shower, for example, you’ll want something absorbent like a cotton/terry material. “For the spas, I choose high quality robes made of natural fibers, like cotton or bamboo. Both are absorbent, breathable, soft on skin, and wash well,” says Rosen. “I can rely on these fabrics to hold up after frequent washing and maintain their quality.”
For luxe options, look for 100 percent cashmere and silk rather than blends. It’ll be a bit of an investment but will be worth it. That being said, they aren’t the best options for straight out of the shower so make sure you have a cotton option as well.
Fit
Fit depends on your preference, Palep explains. “You can have it be snug-fitting or loose-fitting, and this can depend on how/what you are wearing it for as well,” she says. “A robe should fit comfortably with sleeves not hanging over your wrists, and the bottom of the robe should not drag on the floor. You shouldn’t have lots of extra fabric you are gathering up in the tie, but likewise, robes are not designed to be skin tight either. A great-fitting robe should give you a glide-on, flowy, easy feel.”
She suggests making sure the sleeves aren’t too voluminous if you’re going to be doing things—like putting on makeup, getting ready for a night out—in the robe.

“I recommend asking yourself when, where, and why you will wear your robe,” advises Palep. “For instance, a summer robe (lightweight and short) is different from a winter robe (warm and long). Your ‘Saturday morning making pancakes robe’ is different from your ‘putting on makeup’ robe. Do you need a quick cover-up robe in the bedroom? Is this a sexy evening-in robe? Is this your everyday walk to the kitchen and grab your coffee robe? Are you running outside to put the trash cans out in this robe and thus could be seen by the neighbors or the mailman? Rosen agrees. “It all depends on your preference! Rosen agrees. “Replacing your robe depends on a few factors, including quality, fabric, and amount of use. I typically replace my robe every 1-2 years. Synthetic fabrics and terry cloth fabrics wear out quicker so you may need to replace those sooner.”
