Fun fact: healthy adult dogs sleep almost 11 hours a day (ah, must be nice). That means we should probably invest in the best dog bed that won’t leave them stiff and achy after every blissful nap. That’s where these dog beds come into play. From the best overall Brindle Soft Memory Foam (from $25) and the most chew-resistant Casper lounger (from $125) to the smartest choice for your large or aging dog—see: Petfusion Ultimate Dog Bed (from $85)—we talked with experts, tested some ourselves, scoured reviews and cherry picked the best dog bed options that take into account washability (let's be honest, dogs are messes), comfort, support and durability.

Meet the Experts

How We Chose the Best Dog Beds

First and foremost, we took into account what real dog owners (aka proxies for their pups) are looking for when it comes to dog bed products. Repeatedly, we heard these factors:

From there, we pored over hundreds of user reviews (the good, the bad and the ugly), asked around to our own dog-owner, bed-crazy editors and took into account what the experts had to say.

Why Is Choosing a Dog Bed Important?

Dogs like having comfy spots around the home where they can kick back and be themselves (can you blame them?). Victoria Schade at Covetrus Great Pet Care says, “Dog beds are incredibly important for a dog’s well-being, from a comfort standpoint but also because a bed gives them a special spot to call their own.”

While some canines are fine on the kitchen floor, it’s good to have a super supportive, comfortable dog bed or two (or three) as options for your pet.

“Dog beds allow you to take a piece of home with you when you and your furry best friend hit the road together,” Schade says. “A new and [possibly] scary space like a hotel room can become a little less stressful in a familiar bed that smells like home.”

Check out our list and order your pet a new bed. And now that you’ve perfected their sleep, you can move on to more important issues like why their feet smell like Fritos and whether they’re getting enough fruit in their diet.

What the Heck are Dog Zoomies, Anyway?

1. Brindle Soft Memory Foam Dog Bed With Removable Washable Cover

Amazon

Nearly half of all PureWow employees have dogs, so when it comes to pet product advice, all we really have to do is shout. When asked for bed recommendations, one editor sent a link to this one, with a three-inch layer of orthopedic shredded memory foam and a removable microsuede cover, at lightning speed. She said, “My dog is a bit of a diva when it comes to beds—he only likes the softest, most cushiony designs. But I like to make sure that it’s not a total eyesore in my tiny apartment and this one checks both of our boxes. Plus, it’s machine-washable, so I wind up laundering it as much as my own sheets. See…diva.” This bed comes in three sizes and six colorways, so there’s plenty of options to please even the pickiest pup.

2. Bedsure Memory Foam Orthopedic Dog Bed

Amazon

If your dog is like almost every other canine we know, they will sleep on a washcloth if it winds up on the floor. This orthopedic bed is so much comfier and almost as inexpensive. The dual-layer memory foam interior helps relieve joint pressure while supporting your dog’s weight and the outside zips off for easy washing. A non-skid bottom means it works well inside and outside of a crate. When Sparky inevitably chews a hole in it or wears it down to nothing, buying a new one won’t break the bank. As one reviewer succinctly wrote: "Easy to clean and maintain. Waterproof so padding stays fresh and clean. Covers come off for easy washing. Throw in washer and dryer and good to go. I went back and bought another one. Highly recommend."

3. Petfusion Ultimate Dog Bed

Amazon

With side and back bolsters for your pet to rest her head on, this solid four-inch memory foam bed is a keeper. The sides and back will help her feel cuddled, like when she’s snuggling with you in bed. As one reviewer chime in: "My big 70 pound buddy loves his bed and spends most days here cuddled up with his toys watching the Phillies." Even if your dog isn't a Phillies fan, he'll (and you definitely will) appreciate that the memory foam is protected by a sturdy, waterproof cover. Senior dogs especially will find it easy to climb into and soothing on arthritic joints.

4. Lesure Memory Foam Dog Bed

Amazon

Crafted with two layers of CertiPUR-US® Certified Foam, this memory foam bed is ideal for any dogs with brittle bones, joint issues or who are recovering from injuries like one Pit Bull owner who remarked on the bed: "I got my first dog bed for our big boy who is healing from an elbow infection, so I wanted give him as much cushion as possible- he hopped right in and had a blissful sleep." The lining is waterproof, the cover comes off easily to wash if needed. In fact, after many washes, one very happy reviewer wrote, "The beds haven't gotten smooshed down or saggy and the bolster is still standing tall." Choose from four sizes and two colors to suit your breed (and style) up to 90 pounds.

5. Mixjoy Orthopedic Dog Bed

Amazon

You'd be hard-pressed to find my 15-pound Pekinege mix not rolled up like a cinnamon bun in this this donut-shaped dog bed. Though it says "orthopedic" in the description, my dog sinks down into the center—which she loves—but that doesn't scream "easy on the bones." Encased in a super soft and cozy polyester shag, you can stick the whole damn thing in the wash and dryer. Incredibly soft with elevated sides, Mixjoy offers this bed in four sizes for pets up to 90 pounds, but based on our at-home test, I think small dogs, 25-pounds and under, will get the most of this style.

6. EMPSIGN Dog Crate Pad Mat

Amazon

Not only does this crate pad mat come in five different sizes, it’s also reversible. Depending on whether your dog needs a cooling canvas mat or a warm soft mat, this bed provides both. We love that the XXL size works for dogs up to 110 pounds and all sizes can be used inside or outside the crate as needed. It’s also a budget-friendly purchase as prices range from $22 to $50. One reviewer raved, "This bed is perfect. It's exactly the right size for [my dog's] extra large crate, and it features two covers. The outer covers is soft and supple to make it quiet and comfortable to lie on, and the inside cover, which also zips on and off, is waterproof so the dust and mud don't penetrate the memory foam mat."

7. K&H Original Bolster Pet Cot

PetCo

"This is the second of these beds that I have bought for my dog. She loves them. We have one at home and the other at a vacation house. The bed is sturdy, comfortable and a great value. I definitely recommend it!" writes one reviewer who gave this K&H cot five stars. A lightweight but sturdy elevated cot might just be the thing your pup needs if he runs hot or spends a lot of time in the elements (see: camping). It's a far cry from some of the LoveSac-adjacent picks we've included, but not all dogs want/need a bean bag. Some need firm support and a reprieve from ground. Set up this no-fuss indoor/outdoor (thank goodness for rubber feet) cot to give Sparky's belly some much-need circulation. Raised a half-foot from the ground, he'll be off the wet grass/hot concrete and in doggy dreamland.

8. FurHaven Snuggery Orthopedic Bed

Chewy

Your pet can hop into this little padded donut (there is a skid-proof bottom, so you need not worry about it sliding) and then feel super-safe snuggling beneath the attached hood. Light-eyed dogs can be especially sensitive to brightness and this furry hood allows them to tuck their face underneath to block the glare. You can also turn the hood into more of a tent if you want with an included plastic tube insert. Says one reviewer: "My dog is always cold and always snuggling under the blankets! At first she wasn't too sure about this, she just laid on top... until I taught her how to get under the cover. We got the 26" and she's about 25-30 lbs. It works best for her WITH the arch." And when it’s a bit dirty, the bed’s so lightweight and durable, just toss it in the washer-dryer to clean it.

9. Pendleton Grand Canyon National Park Pillow Bed

Chewy

Pendleton is the Hermes blanket of hipster décor: Rugged, tailored and just bright enough so that your home doesn’t look like a campsite. This dog bed, with a zip-off cotton and fleece cover inspired by the Grand Canyon, turns Fido’s resting place into a groovy style statement, which is handy when it comes to big dog beds that measure 30 by 40 inches. "This bed is as cute as the photo! Our dog spends lots of time on it and it looks great in our house. It was worth spending a bit more than the average bed this size," comments one reviewer. It’s also designed to prevent the inner fluff from moving around while your dog sleeps!

10. Avocado Organic Dog Bed + Pillow Bolster

Avocado

This bed is composed of an inch of 100 percent GOTS certified cotton over three inches of breathable coconut husk with a waterproof organic cotton liner plus a sweat-absorbing organic cotton cover. The material repels doggy odor and is naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial—which is why it’s definitely a splurge. In colors like salmon pink and mailman blue (!) we’re all in, including the optional pillow bolster that our dog can situate however he likes, to nestle his back into or to use as a head rest. If you want to go the extra mile, pair it with Avocado’s dog bed frame made from upcycled wood. While there’s currently an 8-to-10-week lead time on the smaller size, Avocado’s large dog beds are ready to ship in one to three business days.

11. Fable Pet Bed

Fable

Talk about no frills! This minimalist dog bed is an unfussy rectangle with sleek lines and a cozy vibe. "These bed covers are lovely looking and comfortable for our dogs. The do not feel ‘plastic’, but do feel like nice cloth. With the added benefit of being water resistant," says one reviewer. It will work well with your decor whether you’re a Marie Kondo devotee or a maximalist (check out the color options!). It’s waterproof, breathable, machine-washable and stain-resistant. Kind of makes you want to do some spring cleaning and buy more dogs, doesn’t it? Plus, the fabric is designed to be used indoors or outdoors, so this could work on a patio or deck.

12. The Casper Dog Bed

Casper

Some pups just love to dig and want to scratch the surface of where they are prepping to lie down…which means their dog bed is going to get shredded fast. Casper to the rescue—this bed’s surface has extra material to mimic the sensation of loose earth when your pet starts pawing at it. A happy reviewer wrote in: "We love this bed. The beige/tan color is great and fits in with our decor. It is super easy to assemble and clean. Very durable and holds up well to playtime and scratches during burrowing. We got the medium for our 23 lb bernedoodle and it's the perfect size, especially when we add her favorite blanket and toys." The memory foam is as strong and durable as the company’s human mattresses, so it’s not going to sag over time. And the side bolsters stay upright so that your furry friend can rest her head and doze comfortably.

What to Consider When Selecting a Dog Bed

Observe, observe, observe. Since your pet can’t lie down on different beds in a mattress store the way you can and can’t communicate if they are pro-memory foam or not, it’s best to take careful account of your pet’s physiology and behavior.

Do Dogs Really Need Beds?

Just like humans, we don't need beds, but they sure make sleeping a lot more comfortable. In fact, Dr. Little says dog beds can reduce pressure on a pup’s back, hips, knees or elbows—whether that's for your aging senior dog dealing with arthritis or your spry 6-month-old puppy, being kind to our pets' bodies improves their standard of living. There's also the practical side of things. For families who don't want their pets on the furniture, providing a bed (or multiple beds around the home) offers alternatives for getting cozy without getting paw prints on the white couch.

What Type of Dog Beds Are Best?

The best dog beds meet your dog where they're at. Doggy Pawton has her own set of preferences and issues apart from Snoop Doggy Dog, so they'd likely benefit from different types of beds. For example, since Snoop is anxious, a bed that provides extra physical contact and coverage could do the trick. Doggy Pawton, on the other hand, starts panting as soon as the temps hit 72 degrees. A cooling bed it is!
