An 11-month-old boy’s body was recovered after the car he was in was swept away by floodwaters, West Virginia deputies say.

Fayette County deputies said they found the infant’s body strapped in his car seat around 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, hours after his mom called 911 for help, according to WSAZ.

The baby’s mother called for help just before 8:30 a.m. on Friday, the sheriff’s department said in a news release, WVNS reported. She said she misjudged the depth of the water and attempted to drive through, but her car got stuck.

After her car got stuck, the mom tried to rescue her baby from his car seat, but the car was swept away, according to the release, the outlet said.

The car was found in an area that had water up to 18-feet with near zero visibility due to mud, deputies said, according to WSAZ.

“We cannot stress enough, the importance of not driving through flood waters,” Fayette County Sheriff Mike Fridley said in the news release, according to the Associated Press. “Water depth is very hard to judge, as well as it is hard to judge the speed of moving water.”

Parts of West Virginia received as much as 4 inches of rain between Thursday and Friday, resulting in “numerous flooding issues,” the National Weather Service said. As of Friday morning, Fayette County had received nearly 3 inches of rain.

Fayette County is about 110miles east of Huntington.
