The 10 Wichita-area winners to know from Week 3 Kansas high school football games

1. Northwest races past Kapaun in City League clash

In what was a showdown between two of the top City League teams, Northwest was the dominant side in a 41-14 home win over Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

Northwest, the No. 5-ranked team in Class 6A, set the tone on the game’s first play, as Michael Lopez Jr. scored an 85-yard touchdown on a pass from Jayce Glasper.

It was all Grizzlies from there, as Cencere Thompson scored three touchdowns on the ground to go along with 115 rushing yards and his running mate, L.J. Phillips, added 121 rushing yards and a pair of scores.

Northwest piled up 490 yards of total offense, as it jumped out to a 20-0 lead and led 41-7 after the third quarter.

Kapaun, the No. 6-ranked team in Class 5A, suffered its second straight defeat in the City League following last week’s loss to East. The Crusaders were once again led by junior running back Omari Elias, who rushed for 150 yards on 32 carries and scored both of his team’s touchdowns.

Following a season-opening loss to Bishop Carroll, Northwest (2-1) has bounced back with two straight key league wins against Heights and Kapaun. The Grizzlies will look to make it three in a row with another crucial league matchup against East (2-1, 2-0 City League) at Carpenter Stadium next Friday.

2. Hutchinson tops Maize South in top-10 Class 5A showdown

In a battle between top-10 teams in Class 5A with an early lead in AV-CTL Div. I on the line, Hutchinson prevailed with a 35-21 victory over Maize South at home.

The No. 7-ranked Salthawks finished with 384 rushing yards and four fourth-down conversions, as speedy running back Noah Khokhar scored three rushing touchdowns and added 114 total yards and Zion Burgess added a game-high 164 rushing yards and a score for Hutchinson to top the No. 4-ranked Mavericks.

A 3-yard Khokhar touchdown with 17 seconds left in the second quarter staked Hutchinson to a 21-7 halftime lead, an advantage it never gave up in the second half. Maize South was able to trim the deficit to a touchdown twice on a Braxton Bigley rushing score and a 16-yard receiving touchdown by Sammy Dresie (10 catches for 94 yards) from Tate McNew (242 passing yards), but the Mavericks never could find the game-tying score.

Hutchinson improved to 3-0 on the season and took the early lead in the AV-CTL Div. I race with a 2-0 record in league play entering a Week 4 showdown at Derby, while Maize South (2-1) suffered its first setback of the season.

3. K-State recruit Avery Johnson throws 6 TD’s in Maize romp

The Avery Johnson show continued in the third week of the season, as the K-State commit and Maize quarterback delivered another big passing performance.

Johnson completed 17 of 20 passes for 277 yards and six touchdowns in Maize’s 49-0 shutout victory over Newton at home.

In Maize’s 3-0 start to the season, Johnson has thrown for 814 yards with a 76% completion rate with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions.

In the Newton game, Bryson Hayes scored a 75-yard touchdown to start the game and finished with a team-high 128 receiving yards and two scores. Senior Justin Stephens also caught a pair of touchdowns and added 54 receiving yards, while Tayveon Williams and Daeshaun Carter added 80 combined rushing yards with Carter, Bryce Cohoon and Aiden Doty all scoring touchdowns.

4. Andover hands Goddard first loss of the season in overtime

A slugfest between a pair of AV-CTL Div. II rivals featured one of the most thrilling finishes of the Week 3 slate, as Andover held its breath until the final moments of a 20-13 home win over Goddard in overtime.

The theatrics began in the final five minutes of regulation, as Goddard scored on a 10-yard run by Micah Johnson for a 13-7 lead with 4:12 remaining only to have the extra-point blocked.

Andover answered back with a scoring drive of its own, as Vaiden Law scored a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:08 left to give the Trojans a chance to take the lead, only for their extra-point attempt to be blocked as well to keep it a 13-all tie.

On the first possession of overtime, Andover opted to go for a touchdown on a fourth-and-6 situation and quarterback Nik Pai connected with B.J. Redic, who had dropped a potential score on the play before, for the go-ahead score in the corner of the end zone.

Goddard’s run-heavy offense had a setback with a holding call on its first play of overtime, which pitted the Lions 20 yards away from the zone. Even still, on a fourth-and-13 play, quarterback Ashton Sell rolled to his right and found a receiver open in the back of the end zone. The receiver caught the pass, but was stepping on the end line, which ruled it an incomplete pass.

It was the first loss of the season for the Lions (2-1), while Andover (2-1) has won back-to-back games and surged to the top of the AV-CTL Div. II league standings.

5. Valley Center edges Eisenhower in low-scoring affair

In a game that only featured 243 yards of total offense between the two teams, a blocked extra-point in the first quarter proved to be the difference in Valley Center’s 7-6 road win over Goddard Eisenhower.

The Tigers reeled off a 13-play drive capped by a touchdown pass from Tyner Horn to Carson Roy on the opening drive of the game, but that would be the final points the No. 9-ranked team in Class 5A would score.

Eisenhower’s defense limited Valley Center to just 98 yards of offense, but the Hornets finally broke through early in the fourth quarter when junior running back Daimont Mucker converted a fourth-and-1 to score a 1-yard touchdown. The extra-point from C.J. Gonzalez put Valley Center ahead 7-6 with 9:11 remaining.

Eisenhower’s next two drives entered Valley Center territory, but the Hornets were able to make fourth-down stands both times to end the threat. An interception by junior linebacker Rock Schomaker ended another drive in the final two minutes.

The key AV-CTL Div. II win moved Valley Center to 2-1 on the season, while the offense for Eisenhower (1-2) wasn’t able to replicate last week’s 47-point explosion in a win over Salina Central.

6. Andover Central pitches shutout victory in road win at Ark City

In a defensive slugfest, Andover Central’s defense rose to the occasion to pitch a shutout in a 10-0 victory on the road at Arkansas City.

It was the second straight road victory to open the season for the Jaguars, which improved to 1-0 in AV-CTL Div. II play.

Running back Jace Rees scored the game’s only touchdown in the second quarter for Andover Central. The statistics for the game have yet to be reported.

Since a 43-14 win over rival Winfield in Week 1, Ark City has now lost back-to-back games entering a road test at Goddard next Friday.

7. Circle off to first 3-0 start to a season since 1980

Circle picked up a 22-12 road win over Winfield to secure its first 3-0 start to a season since 1980.

The turnaround under coach Logan Clothier has been a stunning one, as the Thunderbirds have also cracked the top-10 rankings in Class 4A at No. 9 entering this week.

It was another big receiving week for senior Ty Smith, who finished with 108 receiving yards on just three catches with one touchdown. His 51-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter put Circle up 14-6 just before halftime.

Winfield battled back in the third quarter when Landen Dupras scored his second touchdown of the game on a 7-yard catch from Justyce Tate to trim Circle’s lead to 14-12.

But Circle sealed the victory when Ben McAdoo picked off the Winfield quarterback for a fourth time in the game and returned it for a score.

After claiming its first win in program history over Buhler in Week 2, Circle will also look to pick up its first win over McPherson in a top-10 showdown in Class 4A next Friday slated in McPherson.

8. Campus scores 56 points in first win of the season

After pushing both of its first two opponents of the season, Campus finally broke through in Week 3 with a 56-41 victory at home over Salina South.

The 56 points is the most the Colts have put on the scoreboard since a 57-7 win over Wichita South in the 2018 season.

It is the first win of the season for Campus, which narrowly missed out on an upset bid over Maize South last week in a 17-14 loss.

Statistics have yet to be reported for the game.

9. Augusta registers first win of season in nail-biter over Mulvane

A 38-yard field goal by Mulvane came up short on an untimed down following an Augusta penalty, as the Orioles narrowly escaped with their first win of the season in a 30-28 triumph at home.

Augusta appeared to be in full control of the game when Gavin Kiser connected with Kaden McDaniel for a 15-yard touchdown pass to put the Orioles ahead 30-21 with 3:38 remaining.

But Mulvane running back Fisher Dye (142 rushing yards) gave the Wildcats a quick response with his second rushing touchdown of the game to trim Augusta’s lead to 30-28 with 1:36 left.

After burning through their timeouts, the Wildcats were able to get the ball back after a fourth-down stop. They managed to reach Augusta territory and a defensive penalty by the Orioles on the final offensive play of regulation gave Mulvane a chance to go for the win on an untimed down, but the field goal fell short.

It was the first win of the season for Augusta in the AV-CTL Div. III battle, while Mulvane dropped to 0-3 on the season.

10. Andale wins No. 41 in a row for a 3-0 start

The No. 1-ranked team in Class 3A won its 41st straight game, as Andale won a 58-19 rout of El Dorado at home.

Andale scored all 58 points before halftime, as Will Spexarth, Cooper Marx, Tegan Orth, Owen Eck, Gage Prosser and Noah Bruce all scored touchdowns.

Eck led the way with three scores total and added 59 rushing yards, as Andale racked up 265 rushing yards as a team.
