10 Variations on the Classic Flan

Flan

Flan is one of the most popular desserts in Latin America and Spain. It is not particularly low in fat, but it is an irresistible dessert and simply perfect for any occasion. It is smooth, rich, creamy, and sweet. Conclude any dinner with a flan and you'll have your guests begging for more.

The basic recipe of this dessert is a mixture of eggs, milk, and sugar baked in a mold with caramel. What makes flan so rich is the amount of eggs, the condensed milk, and the evaporated milk used to make the custard. (In some countries it is made with just whole milk and eggs, but I prefer making my flan the way my mom makes it, with a mixture of sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, heavy cream, and eggs.)

Flan is one of my favorite desserts, and today I have many mouthwatering variations to share with you. Take your pick!

1. Classic Flan: This is the traditional flan recipe also known as Flan de Leche. From this recipe you can create just about any flavor of flan you can imagine.

2. Pumpkin Flan: A flan made with pumpkin puree will be the perfect dessert for Thanksgiving dinner.

3. Lucuma Flan: This flan is made with Lucuma, a delicious tropical fruit native to Peru.

4. Mango Flan: This is a popular flan variation in Colombia and one of my favorites. A creamy flan made with fresh mango.

5. Almond Chocoflan: A mixture of chocolate cake, dulce de leche, and flan. Chocoflan is also known as “impossible flan or cake.” To make this dessert, the chocolate batter is poured over the dulce de leche layer, then the flan mixture is poured on top, and in the middle of baking, the layer of batter switches places with the layer of flan.

6. Mango Cheesecake Flan: The addition of cream cheese gives flan a fantastic texture.

7. Chocolate Flan: This chocolate lover's flan is perfect for any occasion.

8. Lime Flan: Fresh, sweet, tangy, creamy and absolutely delicious, the perfect ending to any meal!

9. Pineapple Flan: This flan is made with fresh pineapple juice, sugar, milk, eggs, vanilla, and rum.

10. Orange Flan: A wonderful combination: citrus from the orange, and a creamy and sweet custard.
