10 Shows and Movies to Watch This Weekend
With so many streaming services at our disposal these days, it can feel almost impossible to settle on something to watch. Sometimes, we find ourselves scrolling and scrolling for so long that ultimately, we just end up turning off the TV and going to bed. But even when sites like Netflix offer us their most-watched titles, it still feels hard to pick among all the trending TV shows and movies (not to mention the fact that just because it's trending, doesn't always mean it's good). Luckily, we've decided to make this process a little easier by rounding up some of the best shows and movies from various streaming services in order to turn that endless scroll into a problem of the past. From returning shows like Evil to trending films like Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, here's what to watch this weekend.

1. ‘A League of Their Own’
This reboot series offers a fresh take on the ’92 classic, which follows a group of women who form the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1943. PureWow editor Joel Calfee wrote in his review, "A League of Their Own develops a successful formula by aiming for historical truth and highlighting the lives of people who were left out of the original version."
2. ‘Locke & Key’
Inspired by the comic book series of the same name, this fantasy drama series follows a widowed mother and three young siblings as they move into the Keyhouse, which is full of surprising secrets connected to their father's death. This show tackles a number of deep themes, from trauma and substance abuse to complicated family dynamics, but the magical elements will also remind you of the wizarding world in Harry Potter.
3. ‘Paper Girls’
Paper Girls is being called the female response to Stranger Things due to its ’80s setting and science fiction elements, but the new series from Amazon Prime is much more than that. Based on a popular comic book series of the same name, this sci-fi drama explores the lives of four young girls who travel through time in order to save the world, ultimately encountering future versions of themselves along the way.
4. ‘Carter’
The Korean action-adventure has been taking over Netflix, ranking as the top non-English film with over 27.3 million hours viewed. Carter follows an agent who wakes up in the middle of a deadly pandemic, only to find that all his memories are gone. But before long, he discovers that the only way to stay alive is to listen to the mysteroous voice that's directing him from a device in his ear.
5. ‘Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin’
Pretty Little Liars fans are in for a treat with this spin-off, which is set 20 years after the events of the original series. This time, it follows a new group of teen girls as they get terrorized my a mysterious new assailant—and it's actually really good. On Stream On, Mutz said, " It’s kind of a cross between two of my favorite movies ever: Scream and Mean Girls. Which is weird, but I was watching and I was like, 'It's satisfying both of those things for me.'"
6. ‘Purple Hearts’
Romance fans shouldn't let Purple Hearts slip through the cracks. This Netflix original based upon the novel of the same name follows a singer-songwriter named Cassie (Sofia Carson) who falls into a whirlwind romance with a Marine named Luke (Nicholas Galitzine). And it has clearly been a hit with Netflix viewers, because it's currently sitting as the most-watched film on the site, overtaking movies like The Gray Man and The Sea Beast.
7. ‘Everything's Trash’
There's a new comedy that the co-hosts of Stream On believe to be criminally underrated. PureWow's VP of News and Entertainment, Phil Mutz, said the Phoebe Robinson-created series Everything's Trash is a hit. “She plays a character, also named Phoebe, who is a podcaster, who has no money, and her life is a mess,” he said. “In this, Phoebe is so funny, and she’s so genuinely herself that you just love her.”
8. ‘Evil’
Speaking of highly underrated shows, Stream On co-hosts Mutz and Gulmi also had plenty to say about Evil, which dropped season three in June. The supernatural drama follows a forensic psychologist and former journalist as they investigate a series of paranormal occurrences. Mutz explained, "it's very X-Files-y. For anybody who liked The X-Files, I think you'll like Evil. It's got one partner who believes and the other partner who's a skeptic, and they're teamed up to see [these] unexplained things that are happening.”
9. ‘Not Okay’
Zoey Deutch (Set It Up) and Dylan O'Brien (Teen Wolf) star in this dark comedy directed by Hostages star Quinn Shephard, about an aspiring influencer who pretends to travel to Paris in an attempt to get famous, but finds herself in a complicated lie when people believe she survived a terrorist attack. While there was already buzz about the film due to its lead stars, it turns out that critics were favorable toward the satirical flick as well.
10. ‘Uncoupled’
Neil Patrick Harris may be known for playing a rake on How I Met Your Mother, but he takes on a completely new role in Uncoupled. In this comedy, Harris portrays Michael, a forty-something real estate agent whose boyfriend breaks up with him out of the blue after 17 years together. Now, Michael must navigate dating life in NYC, all while trying to figure himself out.
