The name “Patrick Stewart” may immediately conjure up images of the actor’s famous Captain Jean-Luc Picard character from Star Trek: The Next Generation—but the Hollywood actor has done plenty more besides just starring in the sci-fi series or leading the X-Men as Charles Xavier. From acting in the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company in the late-60s to crossing the pond for his Broadway debut in the 70s, to walking the red carpet with Hollywood icons, Stewart has done it all. Ahead, we take a look at rare photos of the incomparable superstar dating back decades.

1970: Patrick and Blackie in London

In 1970, while starring in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Stewart posed for a photo with a dog named Blackie. The pup was rescued by Avon Dog Rescue Service and was given the role of Crab in the theater production.

1988: A Lie of the Mind Opening Night

Stewart not only likes performing on stage, but he also enjoys catching a play. The actor is dressed upt1 to see the opening night showing of A Life of the Mind, a play written by Sam Shepherd that ran from January through March of 1988. Stewart had kicked off his role as Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation just one year earlier.

1990: Posing for a Sunny Portrait

In 1990, Stewart posed for a portrait while in Los Angeles. He first visited Hollywood in 1968 when staging an eight-week production with the RSC, and then moved there more permanently when filming The Next Generation.

1990: Primetime Emmy Awards Rehearsals

That same year, the actor attended the 42nd Emmy Awards rehearsals dressed in a casual but stylish button-down shirt and faded blue jeans.

1992: CableACE Awards Red Carpet

A couple of years later, Stewart posed with Iman at the 13th Annual CableACE Awards held in Hollywood. The following year, Stewart would be nominated for the Entertainment Host award at the event for hosting the series MGM: When the Lion Roars. which he lost to Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robin Williams who co-hosted Comic Relief V.

1993: Cliffhanger Hollywood Premiere

In 1993, he attended the Hollywood premiere of Cliffhanger, an action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone and John Lithgow. He came with Meredith Baer, an actress and writer he met on a blind date in 1991. The two dated for a couple of years.

1994: Star Trek: Generations Hollywood Premiere

Stewart is pictured here with his then-girlfriend, Wendy Neuss, and co-star, Gates McFadden, at the premiere of Star Trek: Generations. The sci-fi film also starred William Shatner, Alan Ruck, and Jonathan Frakes.

1995: 40th Annual Drama Desk Awards

Stewart walked the red carpet of the 40th Annual Drama Desk Awards with Dame Helen Mirren. 1995 was a busy year for the Stewart—he acted in two movies between commitments for Star Trek, which were Jeffrey and Let It Be Me.

1996: Warner Bros. Store Reopening

Stewart was photographed with an unlikely partner, Bugs Bunny, in 1996 at the reopening of the Warner Bros. store in New York City. That year, the Hollywood star appeared in a TV movie titled The Canterville Ghost and Star Trek: First Contact.

1996: Looking Fresh at LAX

Stewart was snapped at the Los Angeles International Airport that same year wearing a stylish cap, blue jeans, and a blazer layered over a polo. Some months later, he would appear in Conspiracy Theory, a film starring Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts, and the action thriller, Masterminds.
