The 10 Most Hated Chores in America, According to Yelp

‘Tis the season for spring cleaning, and to keep up the holiday spirit, Yelp recently released a list of the top 10 most hated chores in America. While this might seem like an arbitrary roundup as preferences are subjective (you might actually enjoy scrubbing floors while someone else despises it!), it was actually based on data collected by the online business directory.

The platform identified trends by measuring the frequency of searches tied to keywords that describe common cleaning-related terms made between January 2022 to December 2023. They then performed a year-over-year analysis to estimate the increase in searches leading to some pretty interesting insights about our cleaning habits and preferences and what we choose to outsource to professionals. Read on to find out whether or not fellow Americans agree with your cleaning opinions.

Most Hated Chores

If you hate cleaning bathrooms, you’re definitely not alone: According to the data, the number one chore we hate to do ourselves is tile and grout cleaning, which had the largest volume of searches over any other topic in 2023. This task is most frequently outsourced, according to Yelp. Eco and green cleaning earned second place—it’s clear people are starting to care deeply about the planet, but we suspect they’re not confident they’ll do a thorough job that’s environmentally responsible.

Oven cleaning rounded out the top three, followed by professional organizing and then garage decluttering. Carpet cleaning cracked the top 10 as well, with searches for the service increasing over 2,000%, meaning it actually had the largest percentage increase in searches among all home cleaning chores.

Despite this huge jump though, carpet cleaning was (surprisingly) the very last item on the list—it was surpassed by other chores like mattress stain cleaning, pool cleaning, window washing, and upholstery cleaning. So if you’re feeling shame about hiring a pro to help you get any of these jobs done—don’t! You’ll get your spring cleaning done more efficiently, meaning you’ll have more time to enjoy the nice weather.
